The MECO magnet project has seen significant progress, with the conceptual design completed on February 2. Industrial studies were finished by May 2003, and insulation plans for 36 MRads have been established. Key elements include updated coil specifications, fabrication logistics, and a tolerance study indicating that fabrication can meet simpler dimensional specs. A design review was conducted in October 2004, with supplemental funding requested for continued development. Ongoing R&D is focused on validating the insulation approach and assessing alternative recommendations.

MECO Magnet Overview & Status • Magnet Conceptual Design completed Feb02 with cost estimate and final design, fabrication and installation schedule • Industrial studies completed by May03 • Insulation for 36 MRad (CMI) • Refrigerator/liquefier spec/estimate (ACT) • Fabrication logistics and cost (GA) • Continual design evolution with corresponding cost estimate updates • Added PS iron and PS & DS poles for transverse field limitation • 11-coil PS (available conductor length matching) • Updated collimator layout and support • Tolerance study completed indicating that magnets can likely be fabricated to a warm, de-energized dimensional spec rather than to a field spec, which should lead to simpler procurement. • Design review by MOG in Oct04 • Supplemental funding request submitted in Dec04 for $740k in magnet area • R&D includes a copper coil to validate insulation/impregnation approach & cooling • Design funding to evaluate other MOG recommendations (conduction cooled PS, other warm-cold support rod materials, fewer coils) and accompanying structural analyses.
