Environmental Aspects/Impacts • Environmental aspect (cause) • element of organizations activities, products, or services which can interact with the environment • Environmental impact (effect) • any change to the environment whether adverse or beneficial, wholly or partially resulting from an organization’s activities, products, or services

  3. Aspects and Impacts (4.3.1) • An organization evaluates and addresses its own significant aspects, including non-regulated aspects • May be positive or negative • Examples: • Aspect -- Cardboard Recycling • Impact -- Conservation of natural resources • Aspect -- Particulate filters at paint booth • Impact -- Loss of landfill space

  4. Aspects and Impacts • Consider: • Air emissions • Solid/hazardous waste • Contamination of land • Noise, vibration and odor • Water effluents • Land use, energy use, water use • Raw material and resource use • Positive environmental issues

  5. Sources of information • process flow diagram • input/output data (mass balance) • regulatory reports • utility bills • waste hauling records • purchasing receipts • records of external communication • existing data (such as from a quality program) • Gross rejected parts, customer returns • Avg. machine costs/hr • Raw material inventory – days on hand

  6. Identifying Aspects & Impacts 1)Select an activity, a product or service. 2)Identify as many environmental aspects as possible associated with the selected activity. 3)Identify as many actual and potential, positive and negative, environmental impacts associated with each identified aspect.

  12. Ranking (4.3.1) • The organization shall establish and maintain procedures to identify its environmental aspects in order to determine those which can have a significant impact on the environment. • Rank aspects and impacts in order to assess their significance • Company-specific

  16. Significance Scoring • From Environmental Concerns such as: • regulatory/legal exposure • health risk/people • resource conservation • To Business Concerns such as: • effect on the public image/community • cost savings • cost recovery period • equipment/facility

  17. Significance Scoring (cont.) • Also may consider issues such as: • scale of impact • duration of impact • zone of impact • probability of occurrence or likelihood - frequent, likely, possible, rarely, unlikely • severity of impact - catastrophic, severe, moderate, minor
