  2. Hub Hub • A hub connects to multiple computers in a network. When traffic is transmitted thru the hub all devices on the network receives that packet – high chances of collision. • This device is used behind a router to add extra ports to the network so that more devices can be added. • Cost rang can be as low as $5 - $100. router hub

  3. Switch router • A switch is an intelligent hub. Switch is used to connect multiple devices to a network. When a packet comes to a switch, it knows which devices it needs to send the packet too. Whereas a hub, it broadcast the packet to all devices on a network. • Cost rang can be as low as $10 - $400 switch Netgear switch nodes

  4. Router • Router is a device that is between internet and computer. • Router connects to ISP network, authenticates and passes the internet connection to the user computer. • Cost range $20 - $499. Dsl router router computer

  5. Bridge • Easiest way to put bridge as a small version of switch. It only has one port in and one port out. It performs same function as a switch. The only difference is switch has more ports. • Price range $ 20 – 200. bridge

  6. Gateway • A Gateway is a device that allows local network to access outside world (internet). Now a days we see routers are also gateways. • Cost range $50 (basic residential) to very large ISP level up to $13000 2wire residential gateway

  7. Firewall • Firewall is placed between internet and private network. • Firewall restrict unwanted traffic to go to local network and it also restrict access from local network to internet. • Firewall prevents hacker access private networks. • Cost range $100 - $40,000 ( very high end firewall)

  8. Wireless AP • Wireless access point allows internet connection to be shared from modem to other devices at home/business wirelessly. • Cost range $50 - $500

  9. All-in-one Network 8 port switch for 8 computers Optional external firewall Ethernet cable computers • Motorola NVG 510 • Router • Build-in wireless AP “N” wifi • Build-in firewall • Build-in DSL modem • 4 Ethernet ports • Default gateway Now a days we many things build into 1 device. With the above set up, there should be no use to use a bridge and hub. They pretty much became old technologies.
