  3. The Library’s Organizing Principles (1) Library Of Congress Classification Scheme Call Numbers Used by most college and university libraries; it is akin to the Dewey Decimal System. (2) Separate Locations Based on user need, library’s need, or a characteristic of the item.

(3) Although items in the library are separated by type, within those types they are still arranged according to the Library Of Congress system. Libraries strike a compromise between the classification scheme and the characteristic of the item (size, media).
