  2. New School Due to the growth in the Alton Community the Ministry of Education has approved the new Alton Village Catholic Elementary School to be built north of DundasStreet.

  4. St. Christopher Schools Affected The opening of the new Alton Village School will reduce the current accommodation pressures at St. Christopher and St. Elizabeth Seton Schools St. Elizabeth Seton

  5. SBRC Committee • Two parent representatives from each school community • The committee represents the interests of all involved parties – the students, families and staff • The Committee is an Advisory Committee Only • Principals and other Board staff are not involved in this process

  7. Committee Mandate & Process • To develop new school boundary options for St. Christopher, St. Elizabeth Seton and the new Alton Village Catholic Elementary Schools • To assess school boundary options based on the Halton Catholic District School Board criteria for school boundary adjustments

  8. Committee Mandate & Process • To provide school boundary options to the community for review and feedback • To review community input & report the community input to the Board • To submit recommendations to the Board

Criteria • Optimizing schools within enrolment capacities • Minimizing use of portable classrooms • Minimize future boundary adjustments • Optimize cost-effective school transportation • Optimize school enrolment to ensure cost-effective program delivery • Consideration of Catholic Parish boundaries to extent possible

  10. SBRC Milestone Dates • December 6, 2011 – SBRC Presented its Interim Report to Board of Trustees • January 12, 2012 – Open House/Community Information Meeting • January 20, 2012 – Community Input and Comments due date • February 7, 2012 – SBRC Update to Board of Trustees

SBRC Milestone Dates • March 8, 2012 – 2nd Open House/Community Information Meeting • March 22, 2012 – Additional Community Input and Comments due date • April 17, 2012 – SBRC Presentation of Final Report to Board of Trustees • May 1, 2012 – Public delegations to the Board and Board approves new school boundaries

  12. JANUARY 12, 2012 OPEN HOUSE COMMUNITY INFORMATION MEETING Three school boundary options were presented for community comment and input: Option #1 Option #2 Option #3

Community Consult #1 • January 12th Open House/Community Information Meeting was held at St. Elizabeth Seton School • 100 - 125 people attended the Open House/Community Information Meeting where the SBRC reviewed the process, criteria and options • Following the SBRC’s presentation, the floor was opened for parents to ask questions/comments • Approximately 35 parents spoke at the Open House and a total of approximately 45 written comments were received

Community Feedback • All three Interim Boundary Options were perceived as essentially the same option • Why was only one area considered for redirection and why were other areas not an option for redirection? • Move only the students for the new Alton Village School and keep the St. Christopher and St. Elizabeth Seton School boundaries as is • Community requested to see additional school boundary options involving the school attendance area North of Dryden Avenue and West of Orchard Road

Community Feedback • Option #1 was selected as the most preferred option of the three Interim Options • To respond to the community feedback the SBRC requested an extension of time from the Board to complete its mandate • A second Open House/Community Information Meeting was scheduled for March 8, 2012 to provide another opportunity for the community to comment and submit input

MARCH 8, 2012 • The area north of Dundas Street will most likely be redirected to the new Alton Village Catholic Elementary School • This school boundary redirection will most likely be effective for September 2013 • The focus of this evenings Open House/Community Information Meeting is to present the school boundary options for St. Christopher and St. Elizabeth Seton Schools and to seek additional community comment and input • The school attendance area boundaries for these existing two schools would most likely be effective for September 2013

Community Consult #2 • March 8th Open House/Community Information Meeting was held at St. Christopher School • 80 - 100 people attended the Open House/Community Information Meeting where the SBRC reviewed the process, criteria and options • Following the SBRC’s presentation, the floor was opened for parents to ask questions/comments • Approximately 25 parents spoke at the Open House and a total of approximately 60 written comments were received

  19. Comment Sheet Feedback • 41 responses supported Option #1 • 16 responses supported Option #6 • 3 responses supported Option #4 • 1 response supported Option #5 • 4 responses did not support any of the Options

Comment Sheet Feedback • 21 comments requested some form of grandparenting for students impacted • 10 comments were concerned with the additional walk distance as a result of Option #6 • 8 comments were concerned with breaking up or dividing up the neighbourhood in Option #6 • 6 comments expressed child care concerns due to boundary change

Comment Sheet Feedback • 5 comments suggested that a French Immersion Program would balance enrolment at the schools • 3 responses stated that siblings remain together • 3 bussing/walking concerns as a result of boundary changes • 2 comments concerned with walking distance as a result of Option #1

  22. Conclusion After much discussion and reflection, the SBRC unanimously determined to recommend Option #1 to the Trustees as it best met the School Boundary Review Criteria, would keep neighbourhoods together and provided equal distribution of the student enrolment between schools

  23. Recommendations RESOLUTION #1: That, effective for the 2013/2014 school year, the Board directs the current St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Elementary School attendance zone I38, north of Dundas Street, to the new Alton Village Catholic Elementary School

  24. Recommendations RESOLUTION #2: That, effective for the 2013/2014 school year, the Board directs the current St. Christopher Catholic Elementary School attendance area south of and including Blue Spruce Avenue and the area south of Orchard Community Park/Alexander’s Public School, west of Bronte Creek and north of Upper Middle Road, to St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Elementary School

  25. Recommendations RESOLUTION #3: That, effective for the 2013/2014 school year, the Board directs the current St. Mark Catholic Elementary School attendance area north of Dundas Street, west of Walker’s Line and south of Highway No. 407 to the new Alton Village Catholic Elementary School

  26. Recommendations RESOLUTION #4: That, effective for the 2013/2014 school year, the school attendance area boundary for the new Alton Village Catholic Elementary School will include the area north of Dundas Street, west of Tremaine Road and south of Highway No. 407

  27. Recommendations RESOLUTION #5: That, the current Grade 6 students enrolled at St. Christopher Catholic Elementary School be allowed to remain at their existing school for their 2013/2014 graduation school year, however transportation will not be provided if applicable
