What Stops Us? Discuss your experiences and list the factors that prevent you from going the extra mile to: • Satisfy a request using an international supplier • Supply internationally requested material
Potential Barriers • Discovering material – where do I begin? • Finding a supplier who will supply • Delivery – high postage costs • Staff time – not enough time available • Paying ILL charges – how? • Losing Control – will the book come back? • Outdated / Lack of Library Policy
Methods of Payment IFLA vouchers http://www.ifla.org/en/voucher-scheme • 4 and 8 Euro values • 1 voucher per transaction but can charge more. • Reusable, reduced admin costs • Can redeem vouchers • Unlimited validity
Methods of Payment:Credit Card • Ask about accessing this alternative via your bibliographic services or acquisitions section. • Convenient, no costly invoices needed • Flexible, internationally accepted • Sometimes the only option for some direct suppliers of articles.
World Wide Searches (BL) Requesting • Very expensive - £59.50 for supplied loan £55.85 for paper copy and £22 failed request charge • Simple to apply – just edit request if NUKL • A useful option to use occasionally – ask for contribution • Paid for via billing account. Supplying • Supply the item required • Enclose ‘B’ slip and your postal address • Note postage costs on ‘C’ copy and send with claim for payment via BL • Full instructions are enclosed with request.
Transport and Delivery of Journal Articles Photocopies • Convenient but potentially slow postal delivery • Use air mail Fax • Convenient and quick delivery • Often poor quality reproduction Electronic Delivery • Convenient, speedy, good reproduction • Scan in pdf format using freely available adobe software http://get.adobe.com/uk/reader/
Transport and Delivery of Books • Securely pack up parcels • Affix sender details • Use air mail if possible • Check cost of delivery options online: http://www.royalmail.com/portal/rm/jump1?catId=400023&mediaId=400033 • Add insurance costs if required • Cover costs by charge levied – ask for extra vouchers
Suggestions • Reconsider ILL policy • Have some barriers been removed? • Think about your unsatisfied requests – could they have been filled internationally? • Try requesting – see what happens! • Do your best to supply requested items • Acquire some IFLA vouchers?
