  2. Childhood • Born in Ottery St Mary, Devonshire on October 17, 1772 • Youngest of 10 children • After father’s death, he was sent away to Christ’s Hospital School in London

Went to Cambridge University in 1792—known for reading “out of the way” books • Left university without a degree to join a utopian community in America, though it didn’t happen • Married a utopian and gave lectures—his marriage collapsed a few years later • Became very good friends with William Wordsworth--they traveled and published books of poetry together (LYRICAL BALLADS) • He began suffering from neuralgic and rheumatic pains and became addicted to opium • Suffered major depression when his marriage failed and his addiction increased

  4. During the following years he lived in London, on the verge of suicide. He found a permanent shelter in Highgate in the household of Dr. James Gillman, and enjoyed an almost legendary reputation among the younger Romantics. During this time he rarely left the house.

  5. -In 1816 the unfinished poems "Christabel" and "Kubla Khan" were published, and next year appeared "Sibylline Leaves". According to the poet, "Kubla Khan" was inspired by a dream vision. His most important production during this period was the Biographia Literaria(1817). After 1817 Coleridge devoted himself to theological and politico-sociological works. - Coleridge was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 1824. He died in Highgate, near London on July 25, 1834.
