  4. You use questioning and listening skills everyday with your patients, but are you using them effectively in your teaching?

Benefits of Effective Questioning • Arouse curiosity • Stimulate interest in the topic • Clarify concepts • Emphasize key points • Enhance problem-solving ability • Encourage students to think at higher cognitive levels • Motivate student to search for new information • Ascertain students’ knowledge level to aid in modifying instruction

  6. Characteristics of Good Questions • Clearly stated • Common vocabulary • Thought provoking • Properly directed

  7. Types of Questions • Knowledge • Recall of Information • Comprehension • Focuses on Topic Meaning / Intent • Application • Requires Application of New Knowledge/Skill

  8. Types of Questions • Analysis • Systematic Process Logical Conclusion • Synthesis • Hypothesize / Predict • Use All Available Information • Evaluation • Use Specific Criteria to Assess / Justify

  9. Questioning Techniques • Phrase questions clearly /succinctly • Ask questions w/specific intention • Wait-time =10-15 seconds • No response Rephrase at lower level

  10. Questioning Techniques • Probe learners’ response – Helps clarify ideas, reasoning process, or expand on thinking • No response doesn’t mean ignorance • Acknowledge correct responses • Ask higher cognitive order questions (i.e., analysis, synthesis, evaluation) • Avoid trick questions

  11. Additional Techniques • Prepare students for questioning • Use a wide variety of question types • Avoid the use of rhetorical questions • Pose whole-group questions unless seeking clarification • Respond to all answers • Throw back student questions to others
