Major Initiatives Underway • New general education curriculum • Academy of Innovation and Entrepreneurship • Innovation in education: student-centered, active, and experiential learning; blended and on-line courses • Retention/graduation rates; narrow achievement gap • Increased number of STEM and health-related degrees • Collaboration with UM Baltimore: MPower Initiative • CIC integration and collaboration • Corcoran Gallery and College of Art and Design • Major new campus facilities; Route 1 and downtown revitalization; M Square; Purple Line; charter school

  5. Physical Sciences Complex Phase I • 160,000 square feet, $128 million • Department of Physics, Department of Astronomy, Institute for Physical Sciences and Technology, research labs, and faculty and staff offices. • To be completed in Fall 2013

  6. Prince Frederick Hall • 185,500 square feet, $71 million • 464 Beds, including six Resident Assistant rooms, large multipurpose room, three seminar rooms, conference rooms and staff offices. • Planned completion April 2014

  7. Edward St. John Center Learning & Teaching Center • 185,000 square feet, $63 million • 1400 classroom seats – 10,000 students per day • State-of-the-art collaborative classrooms to support General Education with active learning, new technologies, STEM laboratories, and offices for faculty support for teaching innovation • Planned completion Fall 2016

  8. Bioengineering Building • 148,000 square feet • Department of Bioengineering, Fischell Institute for Biomedical Devices, instructional labs, classrooms, research labs and a vivarium. • Planned completion Fall 2017

  9. M Square Research Park • 124 Acres • Near Metro • 2 million sqft at full build-out • Currently: • NOAA CWCP • IARPA • CASL • JGCRI

Advice to New Faculty • Develop a 5-year plan and identify specific goals for yourself in the areas of teaching, research, and professional service. • Do not settle for anything less than excellence in any aspect of your job • Seek out effective role models in your department and build relationships with appropriate senior faculty • Focus on your work • Have fun!
