  1. 英语写作,水平1基础写作Fundamental Writing Unit 4 What Is Wrong with English Teaching in China? 温水一壶

  2. Classroom management • We are going to do four things in our class • Watch an interesting priming courseware • A Sociological Report from the Preventive Writing Hospital Professor’s lecture • Classroom discussion • Task description

  3. An interesting priming courseware • Now let us watch an interesting priming courseware so that we can move to Professor’s Lecture more smoothly • A Report from the Preventive Writing Hospital (External Factors)

  4. Major points in Professor’s Lecture • In this lecture, we are going to talk about the following three things • Introduction to the issue • Title elaboration • A suggested framework

  5. Introduction • Some major problems of English teaching in China • Less innovative approaches in teaching • Lack of updated materials • Ignorance of the social or market demands • Too many irrelevant exams • A sharp contrast between “test-oriented” education and “competence-oriented” education

  6. Title elaboration • A feasible way you can use to narrow down a topic • You may have some alternative choices by using the title elaboration approach • As the times change, so does the professor-student relationship in China. • Do we need critical thinking and scientific training in higher education? • What does “a nice professor” mean to me? • What is professorship? What is studentship?

  7. A suggested framework • On the Professor-student Relationship in China • Introduction • A Cross-cultural Study of This Issue • Our Problems • Discussion • Conclusion

  8. Classroom discussion • Here are some suggested questions for you to think about • What do you think are the most important factors influencing your English learning? • Try to recall some bad experiences you have had with your learning materials in English? • Try to describe an ideal examination system you would like to have in your English study. If possible, provide some feasible suggestions for reform for the current evaluation system as well.

  9. Task description • If you still don’t have an interesting title, why not choose this one: What Is Wrong with English Teaching in China? • If you don’t know how to choose a good structural organization for your work, why not go back to the last part of the Professor’s Lecture for more information? • If you think you don’t have a strong argument in your essay, why not try the title elaboration method to improve the quality of your writing?

  10. Summary • In this unit, we have • appreciated another interesting story from the Preventive Writing Hospital • examined the issue from a holistic perspective • learned a feasible way to narrow down a topic • introduced a suggested framework for the current writing task • had a nice discussion • described the writing task for this unit
