  1. Is there an emergency? Do you need campus police or paramedics? from campus phones call: 911 from CELL PHONES call: 562-985-4101 Save this number in your cell phone!   2. This presentation covers these possible emergencies: • Medical • Fire • Earthquake • Threatening or Violent Behavior • Active Shooter • Bomb Threat or Suspicious Object • Hazardous Materials Spill

  3. You protect your life and others by …. • Following directions of instructors and • emergency personnel. • Assisting persons with disabilities • Evacuating the building IF REQUIRED.

  4. Dial University Police immediately – 562-985-4101 • Describe the problem–nature & severity. • Provide estimated age and gender. • Look for emergency medical ID. Medical Emergency

  5. If you are in class and the fire alarm goes off …. • Take all personal belongings. • Evacuate to the designated area as directed by your instructor or emergency personnel. Stay with your class. • Do not use elevators! Use nearest stairs. • If someone needs assistance, and you can help, do so. • Do not play superhero! Sometimes the best help is to report the need for assistance & location to emergency personnel. • Do not return to the building until building has been cleared for re-entry.

  6. If you are in class and … there is an earthquake …. • Drop, Cover, and Hold if indoors. • Evacuate the building only if a fire alarm is sounding or instructed by emergency responders. • Find open space if outdoors. • After shaking stops, check yourself and others for injuries. • Report any injured, trapped, or missing persons to emergency responders.

If a person becomes disruptive (violent, threatening, bizarre behavior) notify your instructor, contact Campus police 562-985-4101. • If behavior of others is threatening & disruptive, you have the right to leave this classroom or block entry to anyone who is a threat to the well being of the members of this class.   8. Options & Best Practices … what you can do to be safe: Get Out • Leave the area quickly. • Do not use the elevators. • Barricade yourself inside with lights out, close & lock windows/doors. Hide Out • Move away from windows. • If safely possible, call University Police at 562-985-4101 with list of people. • As a last option, fight back as a group instead of being passive targets. Take Out If there is an active shooter ... • Create distraction: yell or throw things to help provide a moment’s advantage.

Be attentive: • What does it look like? • Is a time of explosion known? • Where is it? • If reporting a caller, listen for: gender, approximate age, tone of voice, any accents, any background noise.

Hazardous Materials Spills … … for small spills not involving immediate danger: Dial University Police – 562-985-4101 • Confine spill. • Stay out of contaminated area. • Evacuate the area immediately. • Move crosswind to avoid the fumes. • Follow Building Marshals’ directions. • Stay with your class.
