This course emphasizes experiential learning through project-based and service learning strategies. It aims to engage and motivate students while enabling them to apply their knowledge in real-world contexts. The initial third of the semester focuses on preparation, followed by field experience where students implement their own science units with guidance from experienced teachers. Collaboration and reflection are key components, fostering a deeper understanding of effective teaching practices. Join us in this rewarding journey as we enhance learning experiences for both students and the community.

My Approach/View/Bias to Designing this Course • The Most Powerful Learning is Experiential • Project-Based Learning Engages and Motivates learners while offering lots of different opportunities to learn material and express knowledge and skills • Service Learning helps students “transfer” and apply what they have learned as well as giving reason for learning
Thus – Field Experience is KEY • First third of semester prepares your for the second two thirds– FIELD EXPERIENCE • Planning, implementing and evaluating your OWN science unit with a teaching partner and cooperating teacher • We meet as a class until Feb 28– then we stop meeting on campus as you begin teaching twice a week while I support and observe as you teach until Dec. 15!
Building on the Past • Cooperating teachers are my PARTNERS and most have worked with me (and my students) many times! • They are eager to work with and make you a part of their classroom • Many are Carthage grads • They have high expectations!
Project-Based – Challenges and Benefits • It’s experiential -- not just the teaching but also the planning, collaborating, and “bending at the knees” • Engages the students – gets them actively involved, there is an “arc” – beginning, middle and end – which is gratifying; AND there is a purpose for learning activities • Learning from “failure” – looking for successes in handling difficulties and the unexpected
Service Learning Projects • A teaching and learning method that upholds a commitment to appreciating the assets of and serving the needs of a community partner while enhancing student learning and academic rigor through the practice of intentional reflective thinking and responsible civic action.
Projects Can Involve Partners • Projects can end • RMS • St. Mary’s • Jefferson Lighthouse • Projects can blew up in your face • Projects evolve – the most gratifying and fun of all!
Collaborative Service Projects • All work to help provide learning experiences FOR YOU AND • Service by fulfilling needs for our community
