  1. Pacific Economic Cooperation Committee (PECC) • established in 1980 • policy-oriented, pragmatic and anticipatory. Its work program aims for better cooperation and policy in areas including trade, investment, finance, human resource development, and all major industrial sectors. • the only non-governmental official observer of APEC since APEC’s formation in 1989. • has 23 full Member Committees, two associate members, and two institutional members, from all over Asian-Pacific region. Each Member Committee comprises tripartite, senior representatives. • holds General Meeting once every two years : next meeting to be held in May in Sydney.

  2. PECC’s Objective & Premises • OBJECTIVES • Aims to serve as a regional forum for cooperation and policy coordination to promote economic development in the Asia-Pacific region, based on the following premises: • PREMISES • The respective strengths of business and industry, government, academic and other intellectual circles can be better focused to promote the acceleration of economic growth, social progress, scientific and technological development and environmental quality in the region. • Trade, joint ventures, mutual aid and other forms of linkage, when developed in a spirit of partnership, fairness, respect and genuine cooperation, strengthen the foundation needed for a prosperous, progressive and peaceful Pacific Region.

  3. HKCPEC • Set up in 1990. • HKCPEC members actively participate in the PECC activities and make valuable contribution in various aspects. • HKCPEC was the Chair of PECC during 1999 - 2001. • HKC hosted the PECC XIV General Meeting in 2001.

HKCPEC: Membership • unique tripartite membership : government, business, academic • all members appointed on an ad personam basisprovides an independent and unofficial voice on current policy issues in the Asia Pacific region • The current membership comprises 14 members from appointed by the Secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology.

Reach Out: Youth Project • The focus of HKCPEC in the past few years has been reaching out to the general public on the mission and role of PECC and HKCPEC. • We have embarked on a series of program to publicize the work of regional cooperation to the local public, in particular the business sector and young people. • The “Youth Learning Project on Pacific Economic Cooperation” was first held in 2005 coorganized with the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups with an aim to encourage young people to cultivate their interest in policy issues of the Asia Pacific region. Over 280 young people participated. Two winning teams were sponsored to attend the PECC XVI General Meeting held in Seoul in September 2005.

Youth Learning Project 2007 • OBJECTIVES • To advance understanding on Hong Kong’s economic and trade development • To enhance awareness on economic and trade cooperation in the Asia Pacific region • To increase knowledge, develop analytical skills and encourage strategic thinking of Hong Kong’s role and development in the Asia Pacific region • THEMES • Tourism • Intellectual Property Rights protection • Environmental Protection in the context of regional economic cooperation • Financial logistics and professional services • Winning teams will be sponsored to attend the PECC XVII General Meeting held in Sydney in May 2007.
