  5. Pair Activity:Why do we give our students tests?

  6. TEST PLANS/BLUEPRINTS • Directs test construction • Provides evidence of measurement validity

  7. TEST PLANS/BLUEPRINTS (Cont’d) • Located on www.ncsbn.org • 2010 NCLEX-RN Detailed Test Plan (Educator) • 2013 NCLEX-RN Test Plan (new!) Effective April, 2013

  8. NCLEX-RN® INTEGRATED PROCESSES • Nursing Process • Caring • Communication and documentation • Teaching and learning

  10. NCLEX-RN/PN® CLIENT NEEDS (Cont’d) • Psychosocial integrity • Physiological integrity (Pharmacological therapies & parenteral therapies increased)

  11. COMPONENTS OF TEST PLAN • Is based on unit/class learning outcomes (most important factor in test writing!) • Specifies cognitive level— 1. Memorizing is the lowest level, involves regurgitation of facts and information

  12. Writing Unit Learning Outcomes: Which One Is Best? • Describe suicide precautions, OR • Determine the need for suicide precautions. • Identify the therapeutic effects of antimicrobials, OR • Use clinical decision-making when evaluating actions of antimicrobials.

  13. COMPONENTS OF TEST PLAN (cont’d) 2) Understanding (Comprehension) tests for recollection of facts, principles, theories, or procedures (only one) to answer question.

  14. COMPONENTS OF TEST PLAN (cont’d) 3) Applying (and higher) stimulate critical thinking (includes analyzing, evaluating, and creating) Requires student to critically think to make clinical decisions!!! * Student is asked to apply knowledge from at least two areas or concepts to a specific clinical situation

  15. What type of question? When the nurse walks into the room, the client throws a tray towards the nurse. What behavior does this represent? • Assault • Battery • Libel • Slander

  16. What type of question? A client who had an open reduction of the tibia reports increased pain, swelling, and numbness in the affected leg. What action will the nurse take first? • Administer pain medication. • Call the surgeon immediately. • Elevate the affected leg. • Perform a neurovascular assessment.

  17. COMPONENTS OF TEST PLAN (4) • Includes all steps of the nursing process (NP) and integrated processes (IP) • Is based on the NCLEX test plan for client needs categories (CN)

  18. Types of Test Items • Selected response = 4-choice (single response) or “Select all that apply” (multiple response) multiple choice

  19. Single Response Multiple Choice A client returns from a cholecystectomy with a T-tube connected to drainage. What is the nurse’s priority when managing the T-tube system? • Measure and document the output every 8 hours . • Record the characteristics of the drainage from the tube. • Keep the drainage bag below the insertion site at all times. • Irrigate the T-tube with normal saline every 4 hours.

  20. “Select all that apply” item A woman with an acute ischemic stroke is on seizure and aspiration precautions. What emergency equipment will the nurse have at her bedside? Select all that apply. • Padded tongue blade • Suction apparatus • Oxygen set-up • Vest restraint • Artificial airway

  21. Pair Activity With a partner, write one test item that is a good “Select all that Apply” item, then share with all of us.

  22. Please send a list of attendees with e-mail addresses to deanneblach@aol.com to receive the evaluation form and certificates for contact hours.
