Safety Color Codes- used to alert people to dangers and hazards • Green- Safety equipment and first aid supplies • Red- Fire safety equipment • Orange- Dangerous parts of equipment • Yellow- Adjustments or controls of equipment • Blue- Caution against starting out of order equipment • Gray- Floors

  3. Noise • Measured in decibels • Hearing loss caused by level and time exposed • 90 decibels or higher is dangerous

  4. Safety Policy and Procedure • Policy is a plan • Procedure is an action

  5. House Keeping and Organization • To be safe the shops needs to be large enough to give everyone plenty of room • A clean shop minimizes the chance of an accident occurring • An approved flammable materials cabinet is needed • Tools and materials should be in their proper places to save time and prevent accidents

  6. Other Safety Rules • When lifting heavy items, lift with the legs not the back • No loose clothing, jewelry, etc. • The best clothing in the shop is coveralls • Where those safety glasses!

  7. Causes of farm Accidents • 1. Farm machinery – 44% - almost half • 2. Drowning – 12% • 3. Hit by objects – 9% • 4. Electrical current – 7% • 5. Firearms – 5% • 6. Falls – 5% • 7. Others – 18% includes burns, animals, poisons etc.

  8. What is safety? • When workers are free from danger, risk, or injury • Depends on the people • Most causes of accidents are unsafe actions by people and unsafe working conditions • The best way to control accidents is by prevention

  9. What type of fire extinguisher should you use? • 1. Water is used for Class A fires. • 2. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is used for Classes B and C fires. • 3. Dry chemical is used for Classes A, B, and C fires. • 4. Only Class D extinguishers will work on burning metals. • 5. Extinguishers should be located 3 ½' to 5' above the floor so that they will be easy to reach.
