  1. Becoming a World PowerPart 2 We are still expanding!

  2. Quick review • The U.S. and almost all major countries are dealing with Imperialism in the late 19th and early 20th century. They are creating empires by dominating weaker nations. • There are good points (new markets to sell our goods, good trade relations). Bad points (military and political problems). Ugly points (wars).

  3. So, where have we expanded to? • 1. Alaska • 2. The Pacific Islands of Midway, Hawaii, Guam, Samoa and the Philippines • 3. Puerto Rico • 4. Cuba

  4. And we are not quite done. • Our next goal is Panama. • At this point in time, Panama is a part of Columbia (a neighboring country) and a famous “Rough Rider” Teddy Roosevelt is now President.

  5. Why do we want Panama? The U.S. needs a shorter route between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. • Panama has the smallest area to cut across to make a canal.

  6. Problem • Columbia will not lease us the land we need to build the canal. • So the U.S. gets Panama to revolt against Columbia. • They are successful and become independent of Columbia. The U.S. will be its protector. • In return we get permanent grant for a 10-mile wide strip of land for a Canal Zone.

  7. The U.S. reaction • Some people did not like the methods we used to get • the canal. • 2. Others thought it helped our national security and our • prosperity so the method we used was okay. 11

  8. President Teddy Roosevelt’s thoughts • “If I had followed traditional, conservative methods I would have submitted a dignified State paper of probably 200 pages to Congress and the debates on it would have been going on yet; but I took the Canal Zone and let Congress debate; and while the debate goes on the canal does also.”

  9. Latin America does not like Our tactics. We pay them $25 million later on because of our illegal methods.

  10. The Panama Canal • The canal consists of artificially created lakes, channels, and a series of locks, or water-filled chambers, that raise and lower ships through the mountainous terrain of central Panama. Built by the United States from 1904 to 1914, the Panama Canal posed major engineering challenges, such as damming a major river and digging a channel through a mountain ridge. It was the largest and most complex project of this kind ever undertaken at that time, employing tens of thousands of workers and costing $350 million. • http://www.pancanal.com/

  11. Roosevelt begins an aggressive foreign policy. • He wants the U.S. to become the worlds police officer. • The U.S. will intervene to keep neighboring countries stable, orderly and prosperous. This is called the Roosevelt Corollary. • “Walk softly and carry a big stick”
