The Big Picture! View Here at Home! What “Energy Efficiency” really means What can you do??? What will we cover?
Fact The US represents about 5% of the world population The US consumes about 25% of the total energy utilized in the world United States Energy Usage and Efficiency: Measuring Changes Over Time, Energy Information Administration, www.eia.doe.gove/emeu/efficiency/wec98.htm. 1995 data
Newton’s Third Law of Motion: "To every action there is an equal and opposite reaction"
World Population Prospects: the 1998 Rev Vol I; Comprehensive Tables (UN Sales No. E.99.XIII.9)00
Energy Consumption and Income are Linked 5 billion low-income people in countries with rapid economic growth rates
China is a major world player in importing energy China is bringing on line one to two coal fired power plants each week Both countries want to improve the quality of life of their population – which requires energy! How can this be denied? What will this mean to our future????? BUT: China continues to annually double their wind energy – and adding nuclear plants! (Wind: US – 35 GW, Germany 25 GW, China 12 GW in 2009) World Energy & Environmental Implications – China / India
So what do you think?? Many think there is a problem. Others say “No Problem - it is not man made”. What do you think? More importantly What can we do to prepare for the future??
Nebraska Public Power Utilities • 5th lowest electricity rates in the U.S. • Obligated to meet the energy needs of Nebraskan’s • Determine the optimal generation balance between natural resources, environment, costs, and regulations • What will that look like in 5, 10, 20, 40 years from now?
So what are our some future Energy Options? Can we build more coal stations?? Renewable Energy – such as wind – and do we have it when we need it?? Can we build new hydro? Can we build more nuclear stations and how long will it take?? How stable is Nat. Gas supply and price? The good news – Nebraska is positioned well for near term capacity and fuel mix!
So what “other” options do we have? Lets shed some “Light” on this question!!!
Energy Efficiency – Our Least Cost Resource! • Range for Costs for Energy Efficiency $.01 to $.03/kWh • In 2009 our Program Costs for Energy Efficiency $.014/kWh Our most cost-effective resource is to invest in our customers to save energy and reduce peak demand Source – based on EPRI 2006 TAG with market adjustments – order of magnitude numbers
Why does Energy Efficiency make sense? • Reduces the demand for electricity • Positively impacts the size & timing of future power plants • It is our least cost near term resource • Increasing energy costs and environmental consideration support increased focus on efficiency • As Public Power, helping our customers save energy – is the right thing to do! • Bottom Line – as a Community – Energy Efficiency can decrease community costs and enhance the quality of your community! • New businesses are asking about EE programs 26

NPPD – Wind Energy/Renewables • NPPD is supportive of wind development for Nebraska load – Voluntary goal of 10% by 2020. • NPPD has developed wind over the last decade and has plans to add wind over the next decade. • Even though NPPD is not eligible for Production Tax Credits, NPPD has an approach to minimize the short-term rate impact while providing some risk mitigation. • NPPD is very interested in adding other renewables like solar, biomass, landfill gas and hydro to our generation mix. • Just issued a RFP for 2-10 MW projects!
NPPD’s Role in Wind Development Given opportunities of wind… Given the challenges of wind…
