Objectives • Identification of appropriate germplasm from ICARDA gene bank (landraces & wild species) for resistance to keys biotic and abiotic stresses. • Synthesis of new gene-pool with higher frequency of useful genes from exotic landraces & wild progenitors of Near-East origin. • Evaluation of new recombinants (pre-breeding lines) at farmers’ fields. • Identification of high yielding cultivars through multi-location testing for various production environments

  6. Objectives Cont… • Capacity building • For enhanced utilization of PGR and adoption of frontier technologies in crop improvement. • Empowerment of farmers for participatory breeding.

  7. Targeted Traits Kabuli chickpea Terminal heat & drought tolerance, and resistance to Ascochyta blight Lentil Earliness, tolerance to heat and drought, resistance to Stemphylium blight, root rots

Expected Outputs • Development of varieties for adaptation to changing climate (mitigating soil moisture stress and temperature extremities) • New set of modern cultivars will be available for evaluation at farmers’ field/multilocation evaluation for their possible release • Wide range of varieties will be available to farmers • Appropriate cultivars will be selected by farmers for use in various cropping systems. Seeds of these cultivars would be multiplied and supplied to farmers

An example: economic return • Due to high temperature in central India the • estimated loss (>10%) in chickpea production (2009-10). • The varieties which are likely to be developed • through this project will help in reducing this • damage. Even 1% saving will value about Rs. • 5.00 crores. More than this would be saving in • lentil too.

Objectives Use of of appropriate germplasm/genes (primitive landraces & wild species) for synthesis of new gene pool with higher frequency of useful genes to address climatic variations/new diseases and to fulfill farmers' demands. Evaluation of new recombinants (pre-breeding lines) under targeted agro-ecological conditions, and in farmers’ fields. Identification of high yielding, stress tolerant genotypes through multilocation/multi-season testing for the development of cultivars for commercial cultivation.

Germplasm Utilization • Exploration of exotic germplasm and landraces of wheat and barley from West Asia and growing in India for phenotypic characterization in response to climate change (heat and water-use efficiency) • Genome mapping and synteny of the genes sequenced from wheat and barley could be assigned to encoding abiotic stress tolerance and can be utilized for pulses improvement.

Expected Outputs New useful genes which have not been exploited in Indian programs will be available in Indian gene-bank for long-term use Stabilizing yield and higher productivity under biotic and abiotic stress environments (terminal heat and drought stresses) Seeds of appropriate cultivars selected by farmers for use in various cropping systems would be available for multiplication and distribution
