  1. Authoring Research Papers Made Easier Shriram K Vasudevan B.E., M.Tech., M.B.A., Ph.D., Sr. Assistant Professor / Technical Manager CSE, Amrita University, TN, IN. SHRIRAMKV@Gmail.com Authoring Research Papers Made Easier...

  2. Authoring Research Papers Made Easier...

  3. Secret of success? • Nothing is the hidden here. (Everyone can write) • Only hard work and smart moves. • Here you go with all the details on how to write!!! • I am going to give you some insight on what not to do and what to be done for writing papers. • Writing is easy. All you have to do is cross out the wrong words.–Mark Twain Authoring Research Papers Made Easier...

  4. Ground Rules • Start small. 300 words per day is plenty. • Have an outline. Write up a table of contents to guide you. Then break up each chapter into a few sections. Think of your paper in terms of beginning, middle, and end. Anything more complicated will get you lost. • Don’t ever copy…. This is punishable. Keep this intention away from you!!! This will kill you! • Have a set time to work on your paper every day. If you want to take a day or two off per week, schedule that as time off. Don’t just let the deadline pass. And don’t let yourself off the hook. • Choose a unique place to write. This needs to be different from where you do other activities. The idea is to make this a special space so that when you enter it, you’re ready to work on your project. Authoring Research Papers Made Easier...

  5. Contd., • Give yourself weekly deadlines. It can be a word count, percentage of progress, whatever. Just have something to aim for, and someone who will hold you accountable. • Get early feedback. Nothing stings worse than writing a paper and then having to rewrite it, because you didn’t let anyone look at it. Have a few trusted advisers to help you discern what’s worth writing. • Embrace failure. Know that this will be hard and you will mess up. Be okay with it. Give yourself grace. That’s what will sustain you, not your high standards of perfection. • Write another. Most authors are embarrassed of their first paper. But without that first, they never would have learned the lessons they did. So put your work out there, fail early, and try again. This is the only way you get good. You practice. Authoring Research Papers Made Easier...

  6. Types of Research Papers • Argumentative papers - present two sides of a controversial issue in the one paper • Analytical papers - focus on the findings, methodology or conclusions of other researchers / Self • Definition papers - They describe a topic from a factual standpoint • Compare and contrast papers -  used in literature courses to compare two different authors, or stories from a particular genre • Cause and effect papers - Used in business and education fields • Reports - to outline a case study situation. • Interpretive papers- based on an established theoretical framework (Literature, Humanities) Authoring Research Papers Made Easier...

  7. Before you start! • Who is your reader? • What is your purpose? • What image do you want to project? Authoring Research Papers Made Easier...

  8. Step – 1 Choose A Topic • Choose a topic which interests and challenges you. • Your attitude towards the topic may well determine the amount of effort and enthusiasm you put into your research. • Focus on a limited aspect, e.g. narrow it down from "Religion" to "World Religion" to "Buddhism". • Obtain teacher (Guide)approval for your topic before embarking on a full-scale research. • Select a subject you can manage. Avoid subjects that are too technical, learned, or specialized. Avoid topics that have only a very narrow range of source materials. • Ask yourself the following questions: • Is there enough research available on this topic? • Is the topic new and unique enough that I can offer fresh opinions? Writing Research Papers - A Discussion

  9. Step – 2Begin your research, start collecting information • With a topic selected, the next step is to begin research. • Research comes in numerous forms including web pages, journal articles, books, encyclopedias, interviews, and blog posts, among others. • Take time to look for professional resources who offer valid research and insight into your topic. • Try to use a minimum of five sources to vary your information; never rely on only 1-2 sources. Writing Research Papers - A Discussion

  10. Step – 3Frame problem statement • Do some critical thinking and write your thesis statement down in one sentence. • Your thesis statement is like a declaration of your belief. • The main portion of your essay will consist of arguments to support and defend this belief. • It should be crisp! Like Lays chips to eat!! Writing Research Papers - A Discussion

  11. Step – 4 Make TOC (Tentative outline) • Abstract • Talk brief on what is the change you try to bring. • How did you do? • Were the results encouraging? • Add 6 – 8 Keywords! • Introduction - Very important. • State of the art • Proposed Architecture • Hardware implementation • Software construction • Database information • Challenges faced • Results - Paramount • Analysis • Future scope – Has to be precise • References • Bio statement. Writing Research Papers - A Discussion

  12. Three most important areas in your paper! • INTRODUCTION - State your thesis and the purpose of your research paper clearly. What is the chief reason you are writing the paper? State also how you plan to approach your topic. Is this a factual report, a book review, a comparison, or an analysis of a problem? Explain briefly the major points you plan to cover in your paper and why readers should be interested in your topic. • BODY - This is where you present your arguments to support your thesis statement. • CONCLUSION - Restate or reword your thesis. Summarize your arguments. Explain why you have come to this particular conclusion. • Yes!! Every word is important buddy!! Writing Research Papers - A Discussion

  13. Step – 5 Organize your notes • Organize all the information you have gathered according to your outline. • Critically analyze your research data. • Using the best available sources, check for accuracy and verify that the information is factual, up-to-date, and correct • Check for plagiarism (turnitin.com, I shall show you a demo.) • Cite all the references. Don’t try to steal the credits for other’s inventions. (This is very important.) • Document all ideas borrowed or quotes used very accurately Writing Research Papers - A Discussion
