Extended Learning Opportunities Mission • Milwaukee Public Schools recognizes that students need a variety of comprehensive supports to achieve success in school and in life • Extended learning opportunities such as Summer Academy are critical strategies to leverage student success • Programs include academics, social-emotional learning, career development, enrichment camps, and health and wellness

Summer Curriculum • High school focuses on credit recovery and acceleration with opportunities for community service and service-learning • Elementary curriculum emphasizes math and literacy through the content area of science • Increased emphasis on project-based learning and art integration • Summer enrichment camps • Collaborate with community partners to provide a variety of camps

Enrichment Camps • Extended Learning Opportunities works with many community organizations to sponsor seats in summer enrichment camps • There is no cost to families for these sponsored seats, and priority is given to MPS students • Space is limited, and spots are given on a first-come, first-served basis • To find information on upcoming camp opportunities, families can visit the Extended Learning Opportunities web page: www.mpsmke.com/elo and click on “Enrichment Camps”

High School Programming • Sites: Hamilton, Rufus King, and MHSA • June Session: June 3-28, 2019 • July Session: July 1-26, 2019 (no classes July 4-5) • Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. • City bus M-cards provided • High school Summer Academy includes: • Credit recovery (online and face-to-face) • Credit acceleration (online) • GED Option #2 & Competency-based • Internships • Service-learning/community service

Middle School Programming • June Session: June 3-28, 2019 • July Session: July 1-26, 2019 (no classes July 4-5) Grade 8 Promotional Program • Located at MHSA • Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. • Academic and social emotional support provided • Bilingual and English Language Learner options • Arts integrated programs Grade 8 Acceleration • Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. • Select courses available to rising freshman students • Locations & offerings listed on registration form

Elementary Summer Programming • June Session: June 3-28, 2019 • Congress School, K5 – 8 • July Session: July 1-26, 2019 (no session on July 4–5) • 3 Super Sites (Carver, Congress, and Kluge) have transportation provided within a 2-mile zone • 15 neighborhood sites (listed on Elementary Registration form) • Bilingual and ESL sites available • Elementary programs run Monday – Friday, 7:30 – 11:30 a.m. • Wraparound services are available in both June session and July session(ie: CLC, CCC, Club Rec, Safe Place) • Registration goes through Milwaukee Recreation Department • Fees may apply

Extended School Year Programming • ESY is a program for students identified with a special education disability and who have an Individualized Education Program (IEP) • Not all students with IEPs are eligible for ESY • IEP teams determine if a student qualifies for ESY due to a loss of skills over the summer, severity of the disability, or the emergence of a new skill • If parents think their child might need ESY services they should contact their child’s IEP teacher at their child’s school • The sites that will have ESY programming this summer are Clement (K-5), Congress (K-5), Gaenslen (K-5), and MHSA (6-12)

Bridge Programs • Freshman Bridge • Goal: Enhance student confidence, self-esteem, academic preparation and soft-skills • Location: 21 MPS high school sites • Program Length: 2 days • TBD: August 2019 (based on calendar decision) • Middle School Bridge • All 6-12 & Traditional Middle Schools • Provide sixth grade students an opportunity to form realistic expectations of what middle school will be like • Build a sense of community • Explore extra-curricular activities • Experience the difference between elementary and middle school • Scheduled in two-week window prior to first day of student attendance.

  10. Summer Adventures and Enrichment Activities • Complements classroom instruction • Hands-on experiences • Focus areas include: • Academic Enrichment • Arts programs (i.e.: music, spoken word, dance, theater, visual arts) • Careers & College Readiness • Culinary/Nutrition • Community Involvement/Exploring Wisconsin and/or Milwaukee • Gardening/Urban Agriculture • History/Humanities • Literacy/Language • Mathematics • Nature/Outdoor education • Science • Social-emotional learning/wellness • STEM/Robotics • Technology/Computer Science

  11. Registration for Summer Academy • Paper registration forms (not online) • Forms are posted on website: MPS Summer Academy page • Forms were sent to schools • High school students should work with school counselors to determine which courses are right for them
