Finalize IDP Prepare Phase Time spent in planning prepares the groundwork for a realistic and worthwhile IDP.

  3. IDP Prepare Phase What is Included in this Phase? 1. The Individual Development Planning process begins with planning and preparation. 2. In this phase, you gather information that you will need to draft your development plan. There are 3 steps in the Prepare phase: 1. Assess skill needs 2. Formulate goals 3. Identify development activities

  4. Prepare Create Finalize Manage 1. Assess Skill Needs The first step in preparing for your IDP is to evaluate your skills and abilities. Your IDP generally reflects development needs for your currentjob position or futurecareer goal. • Work with your supervisor to assess your skills and compare to those needed for your current job. • Identify any gaps between current competencies and those required to perform your job functions.

Assess Skill Needs (cont.) • List the skills and knowledge you need to: • Enhance your performance in current position or field of expertise • Address changes in your job role or in the strategic direction of your organization • Prepare yourself for advancement to another position • Discuss which areas you should focus on with your supervisor or coach

  6. Prepare Create Finalize Manage 2. Formulate Goals For the skill needs identified in the first step, you will create realistic development goals that you hope to achieve. For each goal, determine if it is: • Short-Range - Goal you plan to achieve within the next year • Mid-Range– Goal you intend to achieve in 2-4 years • Long-Range – Goal you wish to achieve in 5 years and beyond • An IDP is designed to be a blueprint for your success.

Opportunities for development can take on many forms For each of your development goals/objectives, determine what strategies would best meet your needs Consider your learning style and timeframe Use SATERN to research available courses and reference materials Examples of Activities Certification Formal Training Job Rotation On-the-Job Training Self-Directed Learning Reading Books Online Courses College Classes Shadowing Mentoring Cross-Training Prepare Create Finalize Manage 3. Identify Development Activities The last step of the Prepare phase is to define the strategies you will use to achieve your development goals.

An additional resource:You can have an IDP Coach or Mentor • A Coach or Mentor can: • Provide guidance and advice during the IDP planning • process • Encourage the use of IDP in SATERN as a career • development tool • Comment on your draft/completed IDP • Select Coach or Mentor in your profile

  12. IDP Create Phase (cont.) This module will review all of the steps involved in creating your IDP. You will learn how to: Navigate to the IDP in SATERN Create a new plan Enter plan information Add goals to your plan Add development activities to your plans

  13. 2 1 Prepare Create Finalize Manage To Add a Coach or Mentor When you log in to SATERN, your Personal tab will display. Click Profile.

  14. 2 1 3 Prepare Create Finalize Manage To Add a Coach or Mentor (cont.) • Click on the pencil icon to add or change your Coach/Mentor. • Click on the yellowEmployee Information box to bring up the Edit function . • Browse to find your coach/mentor, select, and click Save.

  15. Verify your Supervisor • Check your supervisor to ensure the correct one is in your supervisor • If not, correct and set the Supervisor By-pass Flag to Y (Yes) Supervisor must be in the same domain as the learner and must be a civil service employee.

  16. 2 1 Click Career, then IDP. Navigate to IDP: Click Career Tab TheView Your Competenciesselection allows you to view your competency assignments from NASA’s Competency Management System (CMS).

  17. Prepare Create Finalize Manage Create a New Plan: Click Create New IDP.

  18. Prepare Create Finalize Manage Enter Plan Information IDP Title and IDP Period are the only two required fields. The IDP Title should be intuitive, so that others (e.g., supervisor, coach) can identify this plan.

  19. 2 1 Enter Plan Information (cont.) Standard date periods are provided for selection: Click Select. The IDP Period is the time period during which you intend to reach the goals on the plan. Click Select on applicable Date Period. • Ask your supervisor or Center Training Office if a certain date period is required.

  20. Enter Plan Information (cont.) Effective Date and Expiration Date will automatically fill, based on the selected IDP Period. Click Add. IDPs created before December 2009 will not have date periods, only expiration dates. Finish creating your Plan:

  22. The next step in creating your plan is to add goals. There are two types of goals: 1. competency-based 2. non-competency-based Let’s add a competency-based goal to your plan. Prepare Create Finalize Manage Add a Competency-Based Goal 22

  24. Use the IDP Goal Wizard functionality to create competency-based goals: Add a Competency-Based Goal (cont.) Click Goal Wizard. 24

  26. When you choose a competency-based goal, you will search the CMS by entering Keywords. 2 1 Prepare Create Finalize Manage Add a Competency-Based Goal (cont.) Enter the Keywords you wish to search for and select your category. Click Next. 26

  27. When the keyword search returns selections, choose the best fit: 2 1 Prepare Create Finalize Manage Add a Competency-Based Goal (cont.) Click Next. Click to Select. 27

  28. In order to finish adding this goal, you need to enter Goal Details. Four fields are required: Add a Competency-Based Goal (cont.) Prepare Create Finalize Manage Confirm or enter the required goal information. You can set the Priorityafter you Savethe Goal by clicking Edit. 28

  29. IDP Section ID You can create short-, mid-, or long-range goals Here, we are adding a Short-Range Goal. Add a Competency-Based Goal (cont.) Select IDP Section ID. 29

  32. The next step is to add a Development Activity. The IDP tool requires at least one development activity to each goal. Some development activities, include, but not limited to: Coursework On-the-job training Professional conferences Prepare Create Finalize Manage Add a Catalog Item 32

  33. Development activities fall into two categories: Catalog Items: consist of SATERN catalog items External Activities: include everything else Now, let’s add catalog items to your plan. Add a Catalog Item (cont.)

  34. Go back to the goal you have just created. Notice the ► symbol next to the Goal Name. Prepare Create Finalize Manage Add a Catalog Item (cont.) Click the ► symbol. 34

  36. Select a development activity type: Selecting Search for Activity to search the SATERN catalog for applicable development activities. Prepare Create Finalize Manage Add a Catalog Item (cont.) Select Search for Activity 36

  37. At this point, you may search the entire SATERN catalog. You can search using any of the following criteria: Keywords Competency Prepare Create Finalize Manage Add a Catalog Item (cont.) • Do not use Rating as a search criterion. 37

  38. This example shows a search for SATERN catalog items by competency. A competency-based goal will automatically appear in the Competency field. After you have entered your search criteria, click Search. • For a broader search, you made need to remove the competency that populates automatically. 38

  39. Note: Competencies have not been assigned to all learning items If you perform a search based on a competency, it may not show all relevant courses. You may wish to broaden your search. 1 Prepare Create Finalize Manage Add a Catalog Item (cont.) After you have selected your items, click Add. Select the desired item/s. 2 39

  40. At this point, you are able to enter Development Activity Details: There are two required fields: Activity Name Target Date Prepare Create Finalize Manage Add a Catalog Item (cont.) To change the activity details, click Edit. Confirm or enter the required activity information. 40

  41. You are also able to add a Priority for these activities: 1- High 2- Medium 3- Low Prepare Create Finalize Manage Add a Catalog Item (cont.) Enter the Priority level for these items. Once you have entered your activity details, click Apply Changes. 41

  44. You have just created a competency-based goal. You also have the option to add goals that are not based on competencies. In the next several slides, you will learn how to add a non-competency-based goal to your plan. Prepare Create Finalize Manage Add a Non-Competency-Based Goal 44

  45. In the Development tab, click New Goal: Prepare Create Finalize Manage Add a Non-Competency-Based Goal (cont.) Click New Goal in the Development tab. 45

  47. Prepare Create Finalize Manage Add a Non-Competency-Based Goal (cont.) First, add the Goal Name and the Goal Description: • Goal Name is the name you choose to give this goal Goal Name is a required field.

You are also able to select a Goal Category to provide an optional means of grouping goals: • Academic Goals • Leadership Development Goals • Other Goals • Personal Growth and Development Goals • Professional Development Goals Select Goal Category. (Optional)

  49. Prepare Create Finalize Manage Add a Non-Competency-Based Goal (cont.) You can create Short-, Mid-, or Long-Range goals, though you are not required to have all three in your plan: • Short-Range • Mid-Range • Long-Range Add a Section.

You are also able to add the Priority for this goal: 1 – High: development necessary 2 – Medium: necessary to accomplish organization strategic goals 3 – Low: goals not directly related to your current job description Select a Priority.
