Indian Scenario • India’s Engineering sector is the largest in Indian Industry. • Export of engineering goods accounts for 27.07% to India’s total exports and is the Largest foreign exchange earner. • Indian engineering exports jumped by a huge 72.6% from Rs. 181571.7 crore in 2009-10 to Rs. 313398.4 crore in 2010-11. • The sector has a - • 29.9% share of the total investment • 62.8% share of foreign collaborations • More than 2,500 firms in the engineering sector have the ISO9000 accreditation. • This sector employs over 4 million skilled and semi-skilled workers (direct and indirect).

Engineering Industry in West Bengal • The state is traditionally been a very important and large producer of engineering goods. • Howrah - known as Sheffield of the East, is the hub of engineering and shipbuilding firms located along the Hooghly river. • Product range – cast iron products, steel wires & tubes, nuts & bolts, railway rolling stocks, prime steel & ferro alloys, forging, etc. • Huge opportunities in casting, forging, machinery, railway wagon manufacturing etc. • Eastern region in India accounts for about 16 percent share in total exports of engineering goods and about 60% of it originate from the State • 20 new Engineering units were set up with investment to the tune of Rs 1349.54 crore in 2010

Wagon Manufacturing Industry of West Bengal • Traditional industry of the state • The state accounts for 90% of total wagon production in India • Out of 12 wagon manufacturers in India 9 are located in West Bengal • Production of wagons in West Bengal has increased by 7.60% during 2009-10 as compared to 2008-09. • More than 1 lakh persons are directly and indirectly employed by the industry. • Chittaranjan Locomotive Works manufactures Electric, Diesel and Electro-diesel Locomotives • Jessop & Co. Limited is engaged in manufacturing of freight cars • Projects in the pipeline: • The wagon manufacturing factory at Kulti and fiat bogey frame unit at Budge Budge are likely to commence production during 2012-13. • Factory at Shyamnagar to manufacture next generation technology propulsion system for use in high power electric locomotives.
