Summary of Updates • Updated the 3GPP section • Updated IEEE section • Updated References • Performed minor editorial changes and text cleanup throughout the document
Proposal for Version 04 • Review and update the draft based on • answers to questions on previous slide • feedback on the mailing list • Make Section 2 more access network technology agnostic. Move discussion on IETF, IEEE related activities from Section 2 to Section 4. • Add new sub-sections under IETF in section 4 that map to sub-sections in 2. • Add more text to 802.11u in section 4
Discussion – Scope of the Draft • Is the problem scope definition somehow limited to EAP WG or solutions based on EAP WG activities? • Is the problem scope limited to certain access technology (eg. WLAN)? • Is the NS problem statement in the draft limited to the boot strapping process or does it include NS during handoffs (for example NS in inter technology handoffs)?
Discussion – 802.11u Network Selection • 802.11u has worked on a new requirements document (802.11-05/0822r3), which includes also requirements for initial network selection • One current Proposal includes: • NAI given in Probe Request • Probe Response indicates whether the AAA infrastructure can authenticate the user • …this generates dummy AAA transactions before the STA attaches to the AP, just to find out whether roaming for the give NAI is supported • Questions: • Is this a right approach? • Is the current AAA (e.g. RADIUS) enough for this? (given there might be a lot of roaming partners behind the AP)
Discussion – Steering of Roaming • Steering of Roaming (SoR) i.e. affecting the network selection from home network AAA during • ...the initial network selection – e.g. user/device selects a roamable network A but home AAA says to the device to select another roamable network B • ...the ongoing session and forcing a dynamic reselection of the roaming network to take place • SoR is already done in cellular networks... using various proprietary mechanisms • GSMA is asking for a better support for SoR and 3GPP is working on new Network Selection principles that should address the above • Currently this is still cellular centric but... it is foreseen that the new work does not really make difference anymore what the used access technology is • Problem: how to implement SoR efficiently so that it is not just based on intentional failures in home AAA? • Questions: • Should anything be done here? • Are current AAA (e.g. RADIUS) enough for efficient SoR?
