  2. 1. Change the problem from sideways to up and down. 2. Look to see if the problem can be done the way it is. EX. 4 - 2⅜ 4 - 2⅜ 3. If it cannot be done the way it is, you have to borrow. 4. Cross out the whole number and reduce it by one. 3 8 8 5. Since you borrowed “1” from the whole number, write it as a fraction meaning “1” but using the denominator you need. EX. 4 - 2⅜
