Author info- Elizabeth Bowen • Born on June 7th, 1899 in Dublin, Ireland. • After she was in art school for a small amount of time, Elizabeth realized that her true calling lied in writing. • In 1923, she published her first book of short stories entitled Encounters. • Also in 1923, Elizabeth married Alan Cameron, an educational administrator. Their marriage was never consummated, but was contented, nonetheless. • The majority of her most popular stories were written shortly after World War II. • Bowen’s works were focused on “life with the lid on and what happens when the lid comes off”. She also examined “the betrayal and secrets that lie beneath the veneer of respectability.” • Elizabeth died of lung cancer on February 22, 1973 in London.

Summary • Mrs. Kathleen Drover comes back to her house in London to retrieve some items that she left behind when she and her husband were forced to flee their home due to the London bombings in WW1. • She finds a letter on her kitchen table. The letter regarded a meeting planned 25 years prior with her past lover. • She has a flashback to when she said goodbye to her lover who was also a soldier. He was leaving for the war and Mrs. Drover was not necessarily upset about it. In fact, she was relieved. • Back in the present day, Mrs. Drover walks to get a taxi to take her back to her actual home. When she gets in the taxi, she meets the driver’s eyes and realizes that it is her ex-soldier/lover. She screams and he “accelerates without mercy”.

Themes • Major - Revenge: The soldier came back to get his revenge on Mrs. Drover after he got back from the war. • Minor - War: The story is set in the WW2 era, and makes references to the WW1 era (when the flashback takes place). - Maintaining Promises: Mrs. Drover’s ex-lover says that he will come back for her when he returns, and he does.
