What makes you want to read?Teens in grades 9/10 answer the question - attractive cover - friend’s recommendation - good theme - funny - suspense - pictures - Stop, Drop and Read - love it -not being forced to read like Stop, Drop and Read - exciting summary - it won a award - it’s a movie - I’m bored with “ nothing else to do” - road trips - biographies - reason to stay up late, parents won’t complain - media ads - length - “not too many pages” - famous author - the way they are displayed - if I have to do research - when I’m stressed - “escape my terrible life!” - availability - I just love books - to learn - fantasy books - sports - “to impress the ladies” - musicians - poetry - magazines with celebrities on them - learn how to do something - to find out about our past - a good book - “ya just gotta!” - good reviews - a world disaster - current events

  4. How are the books selected? • Canadian, current, paperback preferred • Good literary quality • Range of reading levels • Male and female protagonists • Cultural diversity • Range of genre • Range of geographical locations • Urban/rural • Appropriate language and content,

  5. How it Works! • Read 5 of the White Pine titles. • Conference with Mrs. Onstein or your English teacher about the book. • Vote for your favourite title to receive the White Pine Award. • Join everyone for monthly book talks at lunch in the library. • Attend the pizza lunch celebration.

  6. Timeline! • October - Titles are announced. • November - Books ready for check-out - Start Reading - Monthly meetings • March/April - White Pine Jeopardy • April - Voting • May - Pizza lunch and Final Jeopardy Championship

Getting Started • Put your name on the sign up list. • Indicate the name of your English teacher and the semester you are taking English. • White Pine novels can count for book reports in your English class. • Browse through and choose a book. • Sign the book out at the circulation desk. • Listen to the announcements for upcoming activities Have Fun!
