  3. Federalist Papers #10 • Authors of the Federalist Papers thought interest groups were no better than political parties, which they also disliked • Faction

  4. Olson’s Law of Large Groups • Principle stating that “the larger the group, the further it will fall short of providing an optimal amount of a collective good” • Overcome by providing benefits for only those that join

  5. Lobbying • Communication by someone other than a citizen acting on his or her own behalf, directed to a governmental decision maker with the hope of influencing his or her decision

  6. Political Action Committees • Provides for groups to participate in electioneering

  7. Types of Interest Groups • Labor issues • Agriculture issues • Business issues • Environmental issues • Equality issues • Consumers and public interest lobbies
