  3. Three vital systems • Compression or Air • Fuel • Ignition or Fire

  4. The Four Stroke Cycle • Intake • Compression • Power • Exhaust

  5. Intake • Intake valve opens • Piston moves down • Air fuel mixture enters the cylinder

  6. Compression • Intake valve closed • Piston moves upward • Air-fuel mixture is compressed

  7. Power • Spark plug fires • Ignition proceeds • Piston is forced down

  8. Exhaust • Exhaust valve opens • Piston moves upward • Spent gas pushed into exhaust system

  9. Diagnosis We now look back at the three vital systems to establish a diagnostic routine for the engine. • Fuel • Compression or Air • Ignition or Fire

  10. Fuel system diagnosis • Is there gas in the tank? • Is there gas to the intake manifold? • Filters? • Pressure test?

  11. Compression system • Is the air filter clean? • Is the exhaust system flowing? • Compression Test

  12. Ignition System • Is there spark at the spark plug? • Is there spark from the coil? • Is there power to the coil? • Results of a system diagnostic test?
