  3. What is bolt-on? • A bolt-on is an artificially intelligent, comprehensive execution system providing very specific functionality or technology to complement ERP software.

  4. Need of bolt-on • Bolt-ons employ client-specific business rules to meet unique need. • Other software must be wired in to handle additional business functions.

  5. ERP internal integration and Vendors • Early ERP was internal integration • Benefits of best-of-breed • Focus shifted from internal design coherence to the ability to communicate with external software.

  6. Example of best-of-breed • Domino’s Pizza Inc. • Forecasting software from Prescient System Inc. • Schedules and routes the delivery trucks from Manugistics Inc. • Time and attendance system from Kronos Inc. • Human resources module from PeopleSoft • Data mining with tools from Cognos Inc.

  7. Optimization bolt-on • Optimization is powerful tool that planning systems sometimes include as a feature. • Examples • Auction management software • Shopping cart management software • Credit authorization software

Middleware • ERP were accesses through Application Programming interfaces (APIs) • Middleware – is an enabling engine to tie applications together. • Removes the need for APIs. • Exchange data files between ERP packages and other applications. • Transform data into standard formats readable by source and host system.

  9. Major change in ERP • A major change in ERP systems has been the emergence of Web-delivered • Every vendor has developed a portal, which provides linkage to sites of interest to specific user. • Act as middleware
