What are the basic needs of a pig? Space 150 sq. ft./pig Nutrition fresh supply of feed and water Shelter protection from extreme weather conditions First Things First
Facilities • Be a good neighbor • Check deed restrictions and zoning laws before you begin construction • Plan ahead • Can you utilize an existing structure? • Consider costs • Functional, not necessarily elaborate
Facilities • Electricity • Outlets need to be in a safe location • Ceiling height / Ventilation • Temperature • Flooring • Be cautious of slick, smooth surfaces (texture) • Storage • Feed, equipment, supplies
Geographic Location • South Texas • COLD • Warm and dry • Bedding, lamps, ect… • HEAT • Utilize shade, fans, misters, prevailing wind, sand • Avoid mud holes
Soil Type and Drainage • Soil type • High sand content as opposed to a silt or clay soil • Drainage • Slope • 1 ft. slope/ 100 ft. • Base material to build up elevation
Accessibility • Walking distance of your house • Convenience • spend more time at the barn • enjoyed more by youth, family and friends • Trailer access for loading/unloading • Alley ways • Have gates that open across alley ways to make sorting and penning easier
Waste Disposal • Pens should be cleaned daily • Aid in controlling insects, disease, odor • Carry waste away from pens • Compost pile
Project Check List • Schedule your visits • Bio-security • Pay attention to and inquire about the following: • Facilities (clean, functional) • General animal health • Feeding schedule • Fresh water • Weight • Showmanship
