  1. The Nervous System Haley Brong, Katelyn Gaudet, Daniel Cheon, & Shane Mallee

  2. The Nervous System • Complex Network of Cells • Control Mental and Physical Activities & Maintain Homeostasis • Depends on transmission of neuron signals

  3. Function:Nervous System • Send signals from cell to cell • Two ways to transfer signals • Releasing Hormones • Nervous System uses point-to-point signals called “neurons” • Much higher level of specificity

  4. Peripheral Nervous System Daniel Cheon

  5. Peripheral Nervous System • Connects the CNS to limbs and organs • Split into two sections : • Somatic Nervous System • Responsible for all VOLUNTARY muscle contractions and sensory processing (Sensory & Motor Neurons) • Autonomic Nervous System • Controls internal body conditions (regulates heartbeat, respiration, etc.) • Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Division

  6. Neurons • Nerve cells that process and transfer information • Most organelles are located in the cell body • Dendrites- membrane-covered extensions • Axon- long membrane bound projection

  7. Central Nervous System Shane Mallee

  8. Central Nervous System • Receives information from the body • Controls activity of all parts of the body • Made up of brain and spinal cord

  9. The Brain • Center of Nervous System • 3 lbs. Soft Surface • Split into 3 sections (cerebrum, cerebellum, brain stem) • Divided into 2 hemispheres and 4 lobes • Frontal Lobe , Parietal Lobe, Occipital Lobe, & Temporal Lobe • 3 functional divisions • Primary Sensory, Primary Motor

  10. Nervous System Malfunctions and Diseases Katelyn Gaudet

  11. Malfunctions and Diseases • Stroke • Concussion • Alzheimer’s • Parkinson’s
