  1. Welcome TO ENGL 1302Advanced College Rhetoric Ms. Beavers hannah.beavers@ttu.edu Office: English 418 http://beavers1302.wordpress.com/ Office Hours: Mon. and Thurs. from 12:00-1:30pm And by appointment

  2. For Today: • Course Overview • Policies • Expectations • Raider Writer & E-Handbook • BA 1 • Prep Assignment for Next Class • Introductions

  3. Course Overview: • The purpose of 1302 is to teach you how to conduct college level research and to use that research in a writing project. • Each assignment builds on the next. • What are you being asked to do in the drafts? • How do the Brief Assignments prepare you for the drafts?

  4. Policies: • Supplemental Policies – on the handout • Onsite Policies – in the textbook • You must completely read both, then read and sign the statement of intent (which will be posted to the class blog) before our next class meeting. • Bring the signed statement of intent to our next class meeting. If you do not, the highest grade you will be able to get on class participation during our next meeting will be a 50%. • If you do not understand something in the policies, you must contact me for clarification.

  5. Expectations: • YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR OWN EDUCATION. • You must meet with me if you are having any difficulties or have any questions. • You must give yourself enough time to complete the assignments properly. • You are responsible for your own success or failure. • NoReading Quizzes this semester! • Instead, you will complete Prep Assignments for every class. Each Prep Assignment will prepare you for an upcoming Brief Assignment. • In every class, we will discuss the week’s Prep Assignment in small groups and then as a class. • Your completion of the Prep Assignment and participation in class discussion will determine 50% of your daily participation grade.

  6. Raider Writer: • What is Raider Writer? • How do you find it? • https://raiderwriter.engl.ttu.edu/ • I have posted a link for Raider Writer on the class blog. • Where do I find the syllabus for this class? • How do I turn in assignments? • How can I track my grades in Raider Writer? • How do I track my tardies and absences?

  7. E-handbook: • What is the e-handbook? • How do I find it? • http://ebooks.bfwpub.com/ttu.php • The course blog! • I bought it last semester; do I need to do anything else? • How do I buy it? • Why do we need it?

  8. Brief Assignment 1: Pre-Semester Grammar Diagnostic • DUE: Tuesday evening • Your assignments will generally be due every Tuesday. • ALWAYS check the syllabus at least a week in advance so that you know what is coming up. • 11:59:59 pm • This is one of the easier assignments in this course because of its reflective nature. Take advantage of that and DO THE ASSIGNMENT. Don’t automatically lose 300 points from your total grade weights because you failed to turn BA1 in. • There are several steps you will need to complete in order to turn this assignment in, and some of them involve technology (technology sometimes goes wrong)! If you wait until Tuesday evening to start this assignment, it may be too late to contact the correct channels for help.

  9. Brief Assignment 1:Steps • Register in Raider Writer • In Raider Writer, read the assignment description for BA 1 (also available on the course blog) carefully. • Take the pre-semester diagnostic linked on the assignment description. • Type a response in MS Word or another program that catches errors and paste the response into Raider Writer. • Notes about diagnostic: • You can only take it ONCE. • Do NOT start the quiz and exit the screen. There is also a time-out feature on the diagnostic. If you walk away, it will time out and you will have issues getting your score. Budget time to do this in one go so you don’t have this problem! • I suggest taking it in Firefox. Most problems with the diagnostic stem from the browser being used. I suggest NOT taking the diagnostic in Google Chrome; it is the most issue-riddled. • If following link, you MUST use your TTU e-mail address. Do not register with a personal e-mail address. • If you run into any problems, e-mail me immediately so that we can get the issue resolved.

  10. BA 1 Description • To receive full credit for this assignment, you must take the pre-semester diagnostic, and then answer the following in a reflective essay (Remember, an essay has a clear beginning, middle, and end!): • Where and when did you take ENGL1301? What was your grade in the course? If you took 1301 at Tech, what were your pre- and post-diagnostic scores? • What was your score on the pre-diagnostic for 1302? • Was it higher or lower than you expected? • After reviewing your results, and based on your previous writing experiences, including your experience in ENGL 1301, if applicable, which particular grammar elements would you like to focus on this semester? • What other issues with your writing do you believe you still need to focus on at this point? • Be sure to answer all questions completely. Your response should be 300 – 400 words in length.

  11. For Next Class: • Reading 2 (you can find this assignment on the syllabus) • Prep Assignment 1 • Due next class! • This is a warm up for BA 2 as well as important preparation for the Literature Review. What you will do for BA 2 will be more expansive and will require you to follow the assignment instructions carefully. • The full instructions are on the class blog on the “Prep Assignment” page. • 1 full page typed and printed— bring it with you to the next class. • 1" margins/ Times New Roman/ 12 point font/ double spaced • Put only your name and course section at the top, in the right corner, single spaced.

  12. Introductions: Be sure to get to know your classmates. MAKE A BUDDY! You will want to exchange e-mail addresses so that if you have an emergency and must miss class you can find out what you missed. I will NOT repeat the lesson to you if you miss class! That’s why you need a buddy. Another way to stay on top of what’s happening in class? SUBSCRIBE TO THE COURSE BLOG.
