Using Turnitin from Blackboard Preamble Turnitin is an online checking system which compares any paper you submit to it with: • pages on the internet • a range of online databases • previously submitted papers by other students • some ‘cheat’ sites
Using Turnitin from Blackboard Notes: • Each paper submitted is permanently added to the Turnitin database. • Once submitted, the ‘originality report’ may take some time to produce (up to a few hours). • You must decide whether the paper constitutes plagiarism within the ‘meaning of the act’. • Papers can be submitted in a number of electronic forms, including .doc, .txt, .pdf, .rtf and .html (but not directly from the web).
Using Turnitin from Blackboard Procedure 1. On the Blackboard Control Panel for the module, select ‘Assignments’ (or another content area you wish to use). Show me >> 2. In the top task bar, next to ‘Select’, find ‘Turnitin UK Assignment’ in the drop-down menu. Then click on ‘Go’. Show me >>

Complete the box which appears to create a new assignment for this module. • ‘create a new’: select ‘paper assignment’ • ‘assignment title’: enter a title of your choice • ‘point value’: i.e. weighting. You can leave this blank • ‘start date’: date from which papers will be accepted • ‘due date’: deadline • ‘post date’: date on which students can expect feedback • ‘rubric set’: choose ‘No’ • ‘Generate Originality Reports’: Yes • ‘advanced options’: see next slide Show me >>

Advanced options: • ‘Originality Reports’: choose - • straight away (one only) • straight away (can overwrite later) • wait till due date • ‘Originality reports available to students’: yes or no • ‘Allow submissions after due date’: probably yes • ‘Other papers to be checked against submissions’: yes • ‘Compare submissions against these targets’: select all Show me >> Then click on ‘submit’ (top right)
Using Turnitin from Blackboard 5. Before submitting any papers, synchronise the Turnitin list of students with the Blackboard list: • Go back to the Control Panel and select ‘TurnitinUK Assignments’ • ‘View’ the one you want • Click on ‘Roster Sync’ (upper right) Show me >>
Using Turnitin from Blackboard Papers can be submitted in the following ways: • By the students themselves, by selecting the ‘Assignments’ button in Blackboard • By you, uploading papers one-by-one • By you, uploading a batch of papers as a zip file (NB: each paper still has to be allocated to a student)
Using Turnitin from Blackboard Hint: If you don’t want the students to be able to upload papers themselves, make the ‘Assignments’ folder unavailable to students (this can be done in the ‘Manage Course Menu’ option in Blackboard) or put the Turnitin assignment in another content area. Show me >>
Using Turnitin from Blackboard 6. Submitting a single paper: • From the module main page, choose ‘Assignments’, then ‘View/complete’ (this page can also be accessed in a number of other ways) • Against ‘Submit a paper by’, choose ‘file upload’ • Select a student from the drop-down list against ‘author’ or use ‘non-enrolled student’ and enter first and last names • Enter a title for the paper, for identification purposes • Browse to select the file you wish to submit • Click ‘Submit’ • In a few seconds a confirmation screen appears, which includes the text of the file you have submitted. Using Turnitin from Blackboard 7. Find the results To find out what the results are, go back to the Control Panel and select ‘TurnitinUK Assignments’, then ‘view’. The resulting page lists all the papers submitted for this assignment against student names. The column you are interested in is headed ‘report’ Show me >>
Using Turnitin from Blackboard 8. Read the results If an icon in the ‘report’ column is grey, the report is still being prepared. If the report is ready, a % figure appears in the ‘report’ column. This indicates what percentage of the paper matches with other sources. Click on the icon to read the Originality Report.
Using Turnitin from Blackboard 9. Interpreting the report The report is shown in two columns: the left-hand column shows the student’s paper and the right-hand column shows the sources which match. Matching text in the student’s work is highlighted and a number is shown which corresponds with the sources on the right. Click on a number on the left to see the source in more detail. Show me >>
Using Turnitin from Blackboard Further options: • You can exclude quoted text in the paper or bibliography entries by selecting these at the top of the report (although the ‘quoted text’ option doesn’t seem to work very well). • You can exclude any specific source by clicking on the ‘x’ against its entry in the right-hand-column.
