  1. Please take out your homework & write tonight’s homework in your planner! Do Now: 1 minute: Accessing prior knowledge- Answer the following questions to the best of your ability 1. Name as many Native American tribes as you can remember 2. Of the tribes you named, what facts do you remember about them? (type of homes they lived in, currency, did they have a government, where in the country were they located) Make sure to have a pen or pencil out & ready!

The Facts: • The Northeast American Indians are also referred to as Eastern Woodland Indians because most lived in the forest. • Wigwams and longhouses were the typical shelter of Indians living in this region. • By the early sixteenth century the Indians of the Northeast had been in contact with explorers from many European countries. They had met explorers and settlers from England, Spain, France, and Portugal who were interested in the region's vast natural resources including lumber, fish, and furs. • Perhaps the most well known Indian of the Northeast region was Pocahontas. She was a member of the Powhatan tribe. • One of the most famous American Indians of the Northeast was Squanto. He helped the Pilgrims survive after their first winter in America. He was a member of the now extinct Patuxet tribe which was part of the Wampanoag Confederacy. • Small beads made from quahog shells, called wampum, were used by many North American Indians as money for trade with white settlers and explorers.

Pocahontas • She was the daughter of Chief Powhatan, the paramount chief of the Powhatan Chiefdom. • When the English arrived and settled Jamestown in May 1607, Pocahontas was about eleven years old. • The English knew Pocahontas was the favorite daughter of the great Powhatan. On one occasion, she was sent to negotiate for the release of Powhatan prisoners. • The famous rescue of John Smith by Pocahontas. As Smith tells it, he was brought in front of Chief Powhatan, two large stones were placed on the ground, Smith's head was forced upon them, and a warrior raised a club to smash in his brains. Before this could happen, Pocahontas rushed in and placed her head upon his, which stopped the execution. • Once Smith returned to Jamestown, Chief Powhatan sent gifts of food to the starving English. These envoys were usually accompanied by Pocahontas, as she was a sign of peace to the English. • 1613 - Pocahontas was tricked by an Englishman, Capt. Samuel Argall, the chief of the town Passapatanzy, Lopassus and Lopassus’ wife. She was held hostage & would only be returned to her father if he paid the ransom of stolen weapons and English prisoners. During her imprisonment Pocahontas was held in Jamestown & then eventually Henrico (near present day Richmond). • Pocahontas was put under the charge of Reverend Alexander Whitaker. She learned the English language, religion and customs. • The Rolfe family traveled to England in 1616, their expenses paid by the Virginia Company of London. Pocahontas, known as "Lady Rebecca Rolfe” • March 1617, the Rolfe family was ready to return to Virginia. After traveling down the Thames River, Pocahontas, seriously ill, had to be taken ashore. In the town of Gravesend, Pocahontas died of an unspecified illness.

  5. The Iroquois • The Iroquois people have inhabited the areas of Ontario and upstate New York for well over 4,000 years. • Consisted of five tribes prior to European colonization. The Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca. • Outstanding example of political and military organization, complex lifestyle, and an elevated role of women. • The five tribes designed quite an elaborate political system. • included a bicameral (two-house) legislature, much like the British Parliament and modern U.S. Congress. • There was an unwritten constitution that described these proceedings at least as early as 1590.

  6. Iroquois Society • Longhouses were the center of Iroquois life • Archaeologists have unearthed longhouse remains that extend more than the length of a football field. • Agriculture was the main source of food • In Iroquois society, women held a special role • Believed to be linked to the earth's power to create life, women determined how the food would be distributed • Women were also responsible for selecting the sachems for the Confederacy (Sachem = representatives)
