With an area of 12,189 km², Palawan is the fifth largest island in the Philippines. It has about 1 million inhabitants. It is a long and narrow island lying between the South China Sea and the Sulu Sea. It has a maximum width of 39 km and a mountain range with a maximum height of 2,086 m (Mt. Mantalingajan) stretches through its center for a length of 434 km. The Palawan River, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, flows in underground caves with a length of 8 km. The island has had the status of a biosphere reserve since the early 1990s. In 2007, National Geographic Traveler magazine ranked Palawan as the best island destination in the East and Southeast Asia region. The northern part of the island is characterized by incredibly clear water, white beaches and many types of flora and fauna. The summer months are considered the peak season in Palawan. Con una superficie de 12.189 km², Palawan es la quinta isla más grande de Filipinas. Tiene alrededor de 1 millón de habitantes. Es una isla larga y estrecha que se encuentra entre el Mar de China Meridional y el Mar de Sulu. Tiene una anchura máxima de 39 km y una cadena montañosa con una altura máxima de 2.086 m (el monte Mantalingajan) se extiende por su centro con una longitud de 434 km. El río Palawan, declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO, fluye en cuevas subterráneas con una longitud de 8 km. En 2007, la revista National Geographic Traveler clasificó a Palawan como el mejor destino insular en la región del este y sudeste de Asia. V roku 2007 časopis National Geographic Traveler ohodnotil Palawan ako najlepšiu ostrovnú destináciu v regióne východnej a juhovýchodnej Ázie. Severná časť ostrova sa vyznačuje neuveriteľne čistou vodou, bielymi plážami a mnohými druhmi flóry a fauny. Letné mesiace sú na Palawane považované za vrchol sezóny.
