Clinical Protocol (Developed during Karen migration) • Clients would be seen within 48 hrs of arrival in Canada • All would be offered a complete physical exam within two weeks of arrival in Canada; at that visit they would have a thorough history, physical exam, immunizations and investigations • All would continue to be followed here for at least one yr if they desired

  10. Screening of Asymptomatic Refugees • CBC • Hepatitis B • Hepatitis C • Syphilis • HIV • Varicella serology (over 5y.o.) • Vitamin D • Stool for enteric parasites • Urinalysis • Lead levels in children (<7y.o.) • Mantoux tests

  11. Ongoing Projects • Chart Review -change in policy at TPH labs; two abstracts currently submitted

  12. Ongoing Projects-Teaching • Teaching-15 medical residents over last 20 months; currently three medical residents doing research projects with us • We are in the process of obtaining University privileges

  13. Ongoing Projects • Toronto Refugee Health Network • A project that attempts to bring together available resources in Toronto

  14. Ongoing Projects • Refugee Health Conference • We are co-chairs in a project to have the first refugee health conference in Canada in 2009

  15. Ongoing Projects • Health Force Ontario project that will attempt to look at best practices in interdisciplinary care in refugee health

  16. Development of Canadian Clinical Preventive Guidelines for Primary Care of newly arriving Immigrants and RefugeesA national collaboration to improve primary health care for newly arriving immigrants

  17. Current Gaps • Initial visit clinics • Referral to community based providers • Dentistry services for adults • Opportunities for medical residents • Cultivating research capacities
