  3. The Principle of Submission • In virtually every text on husband wife relations • The contemporary context causes people to read their biases back into the text • We must understand the text and its message to the original hearers.

  4. The Principle of Submission • Women were scorned in the ancient world • It was true in Roman as well • Women in Antiquity, Charles Seltman • Women were chattel (imbecilitas)

  9. The Principle of Respect • Eph. 5:33 • “Fear” has a wide variety of meaning; respect is the main idea • Men thrive when they know their wives respect them (Prov. 31:10-12,23)
