Status: Surface • Occupancy of the 34,000 sq ft surface facility took place in the fall of 2005. • Offices, meeting rooms • Labs • 4,600 sq ft of better than class 1000 clean rooms. Chemistry, assembly low bg counting. • generator power, upw, nitrogen cover gas • Control Rooms • IT • Environment controlled server room; high speed network surf/ug and on/off site • Outstanding • Material Handling • Workshop SNOLAB Workshop V, 21 August 2006

Status: Underground • Excavation has proceeded slower than originally forecast • Complexity of excavation in some areas • Coordination with maintaining the running SNO experiment. • The usual types of delays (cage down, power failures etc). • These delays were not unexpected and are a normal part of mine excavation. Experiment Space SNOLAB Workshop V, 21 August 2006
Status: Outfitting Nickel Price • Outfitting design is complete and has gone to tender. • Costs are higher than expected • Very expensive time to be doing construction, let alone in a mine. • Will implement a phased approach to outfitting, priorities being: • New Personnel and Entry Facilities • Ladder Labs, Rectangular Hall • South Drift (old personnel facilities) • The larger experimental spaces in the Ladder Labs and Rectangular Hall will initially be less extensively outfitted than originally intended. • Completion of the outfitting will be done in the operations phase. • Outfitting is expected to begin late 2006 or early 2007 SNOLAB Workshop V, 21 August 2006
Operating Funds • The CFI award to construct SNOLAB did not include long term operating funds. (Operating funds were only included for construction phase.) • Extrapolating from the existing SNO operations expenses we anticipate the need for a $6M budget. • We are developing a mixed agency funding strategy involving federal and provincial agencies. • Have met with positive responses from the agencies in question. SNOLAB Workshop V, 21 August 2006

Summary of Construction Status • Excavation • Phase I • 76% complete. Rectangular Hall is the remaining major excavation. • Completion Spring 2007 • Phase II • Expecting decision within two months • If approved this fall, completion Fall 2007 • Outfitting • Expected to begin late 2006 • Completed (depending on Phase II) end of 2007 or early 2008 • Beneficial occupancy • End of 2007 (experiment fit up could start several months earlier) • Bottom Line: In 2008 there will be 27,500 sq ft (PI) or 34,300 sq ft (PI+PII) of class 2000 cleanroom space available for experiments. SNOLAB OPERATIONS and ORGANIZATION
SNOLAB Organization • We are transitioning from • SNO (an experiment with a lab) to • SNOLAB (a lab with experiments) • Due to the different funding sources we have been intentionally keeping the SNO and SNOLAB operations independent. • As SNO sunsets most of the operations at the site will be conducted through SNOLAB. • We are still developing the SNOLAB organizational structure.
