  2. About prince henry….. • He was born in 1394, and he died in 1460. • He Sponsored explorations, accomplished much for Portugal empire. • He was a Portuguese explorer, soldier and prince.

  3. His life, family, and hobby….. • His mother phillipia was a daughter of English duke john of gaunt. • While he was at his home in cuta, he learned about the continent of Africa. He wanted to explore its coasts. • He later became one of many explorers and became one of the most early geographers.

  4. His name and his islands • In honor of all of the wonderful expeditions that prince henry directed, his name was changed to the wonderful prince henry “the navigator”. • He helped explore the islands of azores, madeira, and the cape verde islands.

  5. His father and henrys great accomplishment….. • He was the Third son of long lost king john the first. • In 1418, founded school of navigation. • He Trained people to learn navigation and science. • Later this would come in handy to sail down west of Africa.

  6. His expeditions….. • Prince henry sent his “lads” on 14 expeditions! • In 1441, henry became involved in the great slave trade. • There he met 2 other explorers antaogoncalves and nunotristao. • The above explorers helped him find caboblanco.(on the next slide.

  7. his last expedition…. • In 1458, henry went on his last expedition to the cape palmas island, an island related to caboblanco.
