  1. M.Sc. Projects PDCS, IWT, HPDC • Speakers: Henri BalHerbert Bos Andy Tanenbaum Thilo Kielmann Spyros Voulgaris/Claudio Martella Roel de Vrijer (Theory) Andy Pimentel (UvA – CSA) Ana Lucia Varbanescu (UvA – SNE) See http://wiki.cs.vu.nl/mp/index.php/Main_Page

  2. Notes • Want to do a project at industry? • Need both company AND a VU supervisor • PhD ambitions? • Contact staff members BEFORE you start MSc project • PhD positions are scarce

  3. VU Computer Systems • High Performance Distributed Computing • Henri Bal, Thilo Kielmann • System and Network Security • Herbert Bos • Large Scale Distributed Systems • Maarten van Steen, Spyros Voulgaris • Systems and Security • Andy Tanenbaum, Bruno Crispo

  4. VU HPDC GROUP • Bridge the gap between demanding applications and complex infrastructure • Distributed programming systems for • Clusters, grids, clouds • Heterogeneous systems (``Jungles”) • Accelerators (GPUs) • Clouds & mobile devices • Big data (Glasswing) • Applications: multimedia, semantic web, model checking, games, astronomy, astrophysics, climate modeling ….

  5. High Performance Distributed Computing group

  6. Projects on Accelerators • Fast Fourier Transform on Many-Core Platforms • Compare the performance of different many-core implementations of FFT and study their suitability for big-data analysis. • Understanding the Auto-Tuning of OpenCL Software • Study how auto-tuning affects the performance and performance portability of a representative sample of algorithms; derive a predictive model of its effectiveness • With Alessio Sclocco (VU) and Rob van Nieuwpoort (NLeSC)

  7. Glasswing: MapReduce on OpenCL • Hadoop: ecosystem forBig Data problems • Data mining, analytics • MapReduce • Glasswing: high performance MapReduce on OpenCL • Uses hardware resources efficiently and utilizes accelerators to speed up complex computations. • MSc project: seamlessly integrate Glasswing with the Hadoop ecosystem to allow higher level frameworks (Pig, Hive, Mahout) to benefit from Glasswing • With Ismail El Helw and Rutger Hofman

  8. Distributed Smartphone Applications • We have studied smart phones for past 8 years • PhD theses: • Nick Palmer (Oct. 2012), Roelof Kemp (2014) • SWAN: context sensing framework • CUCKOO: offloading to a Cloud • RAVEN: data management

  9. A smartphone based realtime distributed sport coach • Use smartphones & clouds for coaching • Sensing framework for (groups of) athletes • Evaluates context conditions and gives real-time feedback • Capture on-phone sensors (accelerometers, GPS, voice), Bluetooth sensors (heart rate monitors), internet sensors. • Challenges: • What to do where (phone, cloud)? • Energy • Scaling to many (high-resolution) sensors and users • With VU Human Movement Science, Twente, Industry Commit/

  10. External Contacts • University of Groningen • Optimizing simulation models for animal locomotion using GPUs • Netherlands eScience Center • IMC • Challenging projects in the area of low latency, high volumes of data,  and distributed computing set within the agile domain of high frequency trading • ShareCompany • KPMG (Big data) • Bright Computing (Cluster computing) • SURFsara (Hadoop) • TNO (On-demand networks) • Vectorwise (High-performance databases)
