What is a Bully • It’s bullying if: • One person is hurting or harming another with words or behavior • It is being done intentionally • The person being hurt doesn’t know how to defend themselves from the behavior • The person doing it feels they have more *power • examples peer pressure, pushing, name calling, making them feel uncomfortable, spreading rumors

  3. Types • Physical- pushing, tripping, shoving, biting, kicking, taking/ damaging stuff • Verbal- quick direct and easy to do. Teasing, threats, name calling, intimidation, rumors, gossip • Sexual- demean someone about their gender or sexuality, inappropriate touching, unwelcome contact, posting inappropriate pictures • Emotional- more sophisticated. Hurts people on the inside. Leaving someone out on purpose, hurting someone’s reputation, and humiliating someone publicly. • Cyber bullying- text messages, posting videos, stories, photos, through internet or technology.

  4. Why Targets • Feel smaller or outnumbered • No help • No one to talk to • No one standing up for them

  5. Myths? Bullying is the same as arguing Bullying only happens in middle school Bullies are only boys Bullying doesn’t happen often online or through the phone Words will never hurt you Bullying is a natural part of growing up Bullying makes you tougher It is only harmless teasing

  8. Prevention • Tell someone you trust • Develop a plan about how they can respond to the situation • Show bully their actions have consequences • How can other students help? • Speak up • Reach out • Be a friend
