  1. Weather Map

  2. Reading a Weather Map • Meteorologists get information from weather stations

  3. Reading a Weather Map • Weather stations transmit info in symbols

  4. Reading a Weather Map • Symbols tell of: • Temperature • Cloud cover • Wind speed and direction • Air pressure

  5. Reading a Weather Map

  6. Cloud Cover

  7. Wind Speed and Direction

  8. Air Pressure • Measured in millibars (mbs) or Kilopascals (kPa) • Sea level ~ 1013.2 mbsor 101.32 kPa

  9. Air Pressure • If 1st number is less than 5; add 10 • If 1st number is greater than 5; add 9

  10. Air Pressure • Areas of significantly HIGHER pressure = highor anticyclone • Weather has prolonged calm, clear skies – winds swirl outward

  11. Air Pressure • Areas of significantly LOWER pressure = low or cyclone or depression • Weather is stormy with winds circulating inward

  12. Weather Map • Like topographic maps • Pressure shown using isobars

  13. Weather Map • Closer the isobars, the faster the change in pressure • Greater wind

  14. Fronts • Cold Front • Warm Front • Stationary Front • Occluded Front
