  5. The Common Application Process The smoothest process requires individualized attention/responsibilities from three different parties: Student Role Guidance Role Parent Role

  6. Student Role Overview • Stay organized • Keep a folder of all paperwork and date activities as they happen. • Be inquisitive • Ask questions!! Your inquiries help us guide your actions. • Manage time wisely • Prioritize the college process high on personal list. *The only rule to play by is ‘The Earlier The Better”*

  7. The CompleteCollege Application Student Role continued… • The Application • Sign up for the Common App workshop for a detailed breakdown of all requirements. • The Essay • Utilize the English Department for assistance (Eng. 12R deadline 10/4/13) • Don’t be afraid to tell your story • Answer complete question being asked • Monitor length requirements • Letters of Recommendations • 2-3 teachers (2 teachers plus coach/advisor/employer/clergy/etc.) • Blue recommendation form

  8. The CompleteCollege Application Student Role continued… • The Activities Resume • Use the Green Junior Packet as a guide • All colleges plus All Scholarships • Highlight leadership roles • SAT/ACT • Scores are evaluated based on highest individual section score and recalculated. • Students must have test scores sent officially from collegeboard.org/actstudent.org • Fairtest.org (List of test optional schools)

  9. When does this need to be completed by??? Answer: Two weeks prior to college application deadline! See school calendar for details! Your college application type and deadline will dictate your schedule. Once you know of a college you are applying to, learn its deadline FIRST!

  10. Guidance Role The Guidance Department will oversee the processing of all applications submitted. The Blue Tracking Form- This form will individually track all applications submitted. Naviance- FERPA agreement will allow most supplemental submissions to happen electronically. Status can be monitored.

  11. Parent Role ** Communication is Key ** Monitor your child’s application process. • Are they adhering to deadlines? • Did they start their essay? • Did they send official test scores to colleges yet? Continue discussions about: • Distance • Size • Public vs Private/Cost • Major

  12. What happens if the college sends me a letter stating information is missing??? Answer: Contact the admissions office to confirm the accuracy of the letter. Schools often send a generic letter once an application is received. Don’t panic! Commonly this is simply information crossed in the mail.

  13. New Initiatives… • Guidance Newsletter • 3 editions/year (Fall, Winter, Spring) • Will break down ‘need to know’ information by grade, and upcoming events • Introduced 9/24/13 at Back to School Night • Financial Aid Night • Date and Time: TBD (Aiming for early December) • Representative from local college

  14. Thank you for attending and drive home safely!! “We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future.”- F.D.R “The task of the modern educator is not to cut down jungles, but to irrigate deserts.” – C.S.Lewis “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”- Nelson Mandela Questions????
