  1. SpringResearch Project Mr. Wellington – Mrs. Austro 9SC Feb-March 2012

  2. What is it? Two Parts • Research Paper • Cover Page • Paper (3-5 pages) • Works Cited • Project • Details later

  3. RESEARCH PAPER

  4. Major Steps for Paper • Pick a topic • Start Research- hi-light, brainstorm! • Thesis statement • Continue research & Do Note Cards (keep track of sources!) • Works Cited (as you go!) • Outline • Revise outline • Revise Works Cited • Turn Outline into A DRAFT • Revise Draft • Final Paper

  5. How To PICK A TOPIC

  6. How to pick a topic • Take a position on a topic and persuade your readers • Examples: • Cell phones should be banned in schools! • Abortion is wrong and should be illegal • All schools should have school uniforms! • School lunches should be more nutritious • Video-game violence needs to be controlled • Schools should not teach sex education

  7. How to pick a topic • Pick a topic you are interested in • Pick a position (for or against) you believe in • Pick a topic with enough information, but not too much • Narrow or widen your search • You need to use a minimum of 5 sources. Choose a topic that has enough sources.

  8. Start Research • Print out articles in library • Read, hi-light and brainstorm! • Make sure you save your sources as you go in the correct format! (next slide) • Do not wait to do your sources “later”

  11. How To WRITE A THESIS STATEMENT

  12. What is a Thesis Statement? • Lets the reader know your position (are you for or against it?) • Lets the reader know what is coming up

  13. Thesis Statement Formula ___(Topic)_________ should __(raised/lowered/changed/required/etc.)__ because reason #1, reason #2, and reason #3. Example: Schools should require uniforms because they make schools safer, improve academic discipline, and improve attendance

  14. Thesis statement: How do I know what reasons #1, #2 and #3 are? • Look at what you hi-lighted in your articles • Group the main ideas together • Think about how you will organize your paper • Read and hi-light more if you need to

  15. Thesis Statement Example Thesis Example: Schools should require uniforms because they make schools safer, improve academic discipline, and improve attendance

  16. How To WRITE NOTE CARDS

  17. Note Cards • Once your thesis statement is approved, you can continue your research • Start making note cards • Do your Works Cited as you go! (next slide)

  18. Works Cited NO! http://www.2facts.com/icof_story.aspx?PIN=i1600610#h3 "Childhood Obesity." Issues & Controversies. Facts On File News Services, 14 Nov. 2011. Web. 2 Feb. 2012. <http://www.2facts.com/article/i1600610>. YES!

  19. Note Cards- Front Quote- COPY EXACTLY! “In the 1980s, public schools were often compared unfavorably to Catholic schools. Noting the perceived benefit that uniforms conferred upon Catholic schools, some public schools decided to adopt a school uniform policy” (Lastname 46). This means that some public schools decided to adopt uniform policies similar to those of Catholic schools. Page Number Own Words

  20. Note Cards- Back NO! http://www.greatschools.org/find-a-school/defining-your-ideal/121-school-uniforms.gs Angier, Natalie. "Chemists Learn Why Vegetables are Good for You." New York Times 13 Apr. 1993, late ed.: C1. New York Times Ondisc. CD-ROM. UMI-Proquest. Oct. 1993. YES!

  21. Alternate Way of Doing Note Cards ------------------------------------------------------------- “However, numerous studies show that video games, especially ones with violent content, make teens more aggressive” (Norcia 1). This means that there are many studies which show violent video games make teens more aggressive. Norcia, Andrea. "The Impact of Video Games on Children." The Impact of Video Games on Children. Web. 30 Jan. 2013. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  22. Note Cards-How Many Note Cards Do I Need? • 8-10 body paragraphs • Each body paragraph has 2+ quotes • You need at least 2 notes cards from 5 sources • ( 1 quote per notecard) • 8 x 2 = 16 note cards may work for some • 10 x 2 = 20 note cards may work for others • It is likely you will need 20+ note cards because you will end up throwing some away. • Do you want to have to go back and redo your research?

  23. How To MAKE YOUR OUTLINE

  24. What does an outline look like? • Introduction • Ask a question! • Gangs have many negative effects on our society. • We need to spend more resources to figure out why kids join gangs and what we can do to end gangs. II. Negative Affects • There are many negative effects related to gangs • Gang violence causes fear and changes how kids behave in school • In a poll of 2,000 teenagers, “the respondents reported that their fears of violence often affect how they behave and perform in school.” (“Teens’ Fears” 1). • This demonstrates that fear of gang violence affects their learning • “About 13% said that they had performed poorly in school because of their concerns about crime and violence.” (“Teens’ Fears” 1). • Many teens fear gangs.

  25. You will turn your note cards into an outline • Start by grouping your cards into main ideas • This may or may notbe the same as your original thesis. • If it is different, change your thesis! See me.

  26. Grouping your cards Thesis (Reason #1) (Reason #3) (Reason #2) Topic Sent (groups of Note cards) Topic Sent (groups of Note cards) Topic Sent (groups of Note cards) Topic Sent (groups of Note cards) Topic Sent (groups of Note cards) Topic Sent (groups of Note cards)

  27. Example of grouping cards

  28. Note Cards - > Outline Thesis • Make sure your notecards are grouped • Make your own graphic organizer (Reason #1) (Reason #3) (Reason #2) Topic Sent (groups of Note cards) Topic Sent (groups of Note cards) Topic Sent (groups of Note cards) Topic Sent (groups of Note cards) Topic Sent (groups of Note cards) Topic Sent (groups of Note cards)

  29. What’s in a good intro? 3-5 Sentences • Start with a question or attention-grabber! • Make a general statement about your topic. • The last sentence must be your thesis!

  30. Turn your thesis -> Intro

  31. Thesis - > Intro Example • Introduction • Ask a question! • Are gangs really a problem in our society? • Should we be worried about their presence in our communities? • Do we need to take immediate actions in this threat? • Gangs have many negative effects on our society. • We need to spend more resources to figure out why kids join gangs and what we can do to end gangs.

  32. Outline Format- Body Paragraphs • Minimum 4 sentences II. Reason ___________ a. Topic sentence (use transition words) • Then, quote #1 • Then put the quote in your own words. (This illustrates…) • Then, quote #2 • Put quote #2 in your own words. (This demonstrates/illustrates/shows/proves/etc…) • Closing sentence

  33. Body #1

  34. Gang Violence/ Schools Body #1 example Main Reason #1 • Negative Affects • There are many negative effects related to gangs • Gang violence causes fear and changes how kids behave in school • In a poll of 2,000 teenagers, “the respondents reported that their fears of violence often affect how they behave and perform in school.” (“Teens’ Fears” 1). • This demonstrates that fear of gang violence affects their learning • “About 13% said that they had performed poorly in school because of their concerns about crime and violence.” (“Teens’ Fears” 1). • Many teens fear gangs. Gang Violence/ Schools

  35. Body #2

  36. Body #2 Example II. Negative Affects • Leads to innocent deaths from shootings • “Many victims of gang-related violence are innocent bystanders” (“Everything You Need to Know about Street Gangs” 19). • This means that innocent people are affected by gang violence • Leads to felony convictions and lead to an increase of crime and drug runs • “As a member, Shelia was used for drug runs” (“All You Need to Know about Street Gangs” 46). • This shows that members of a gang are manipulated and encouraged or forced to commit crimes.

  37. TURN YOUR OUTLINE INTO A ROUGH DRAFT

  38. DRAFT Requirements • 3-5 pages long • Double-spaced • Times New Roman or Arial Font • 12 point font • Margins 1” top/bottom/right/left

  39. How long will my paper be? • 3-5 pages • How many paragraphs? • Intro: 1 • Body: 5-8 • Conclusion: 1 • Total = 7-10

  40. Intro • 3-5 Sentences • Start with a question or attention-grabber! • Let the reader know what is coming up. • The last sentence must be your thesis!

  41. Body Paragraphs • Minimum 4 sentences • Topic sentence (use transition words) • Then, quote • Then put the quote in your own words. (This illustrates…) • Then, quote #2 • Put quote #2 in your own words. (This demonstrates…) • Closing sentence

  42. Conclusion • 3-5 sentences • Restate your thesis • Add a little zing…something that makes the reader think!

  43. Putting it all together 3) Works Cited • Use proper format • Must be alphabetical 1) Cover Page • Title • Name • Class/teacher • Date • Image 2) Paper • Use page numbers for paper only! • Do not number cover page
