  1. An Introduction to Heritage Concept, Percept and Practice Dr. Dulari Qureshi

  2. Heritage is anything that is or may be inherited. A nation’s historic buildings, monuments, countryside, especially when regarded as worthy of preservation • Heritage can also be explained as ‘anything’ which has been transmitted from the past or handed down by transition What is Heritage?

  3. ‘Anything’ here is interpreted as tradition, custom, history, religion, religious observances, philosophy, art styles/performing arts, monumental objects and even nature’s manifestations, provided they are transmitted from the past. • Heritage can be classified as • Religious • Historical • Art and Architecture • Lifestyles, Traditions, Lores and Legends • Fairs and Festivals • Institutions of Excellence (Scientific, Academic, Religious) • Natural Heritage (Physical and Biotic)

  4. However anything does not mean everything that has come down from the past can be classified as Heritage. • Heritage needs to be ‘uncommon’ • Has to have a older origin • Has distinct trait or charisma • OR a relationship with some eminent personality • Or have some significant event or happening • And most important something which evokes some degree of adoration and pride of association • so that they would like to preserve and develop it

  5. Heritage identity also depends on the prevailing socio-cultural environment and condition • A prime heritage at one time may be significant • But may take a back seat in later year • Example: Gateway of India and India Gate controversy

  6. Another question is why does a particular bird, animal or plant come to be perceived as Heritage • It could be due to a Heritage bird, plant or animal on the verge of extinction and needs to be preserved • Or because some beliefs or myths or religious importance

  7. Heritage identification helps to preserve to protect the sites • Monumental Heritage like Ajanta, Ellora, Elephanta are well conserved and preserved • Besides there are ‘Heritage Hotels’ that have been given new utility value and are conserved • New Heritage is created with ‘Theme Parks’ • Heritage Walk is a new concept Heritage Advantages
