  5. Pest Management • Managing pest populations • through strategies that take into • account the environmental and • economic impacts while lowering • the pest population to an • acceptable level.

  6. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) • Monitor pest populations and • employ strategies to maintain • them below predetermined • thresholds. Controls are cultural, • biological, or chemical and are on • a prescription basis.

  7. Monitoring • Regular scouting of crops to • identify pest problems early. • Management strategies can then • be implemented that are based • on the life cycle of the pest and • are economically and • environmentally sound.

  8. Cultural controls • Managing soil moisture and nutrient levels for healthy plants • Plant in proper environment • Resistant varieties • Increased air movement • Sanitation • Mulching

  9. Biological Controls • Predators • Insects or other animals • Parasitoids • Insects which lay eggs on or in host • Parasites Fungi, bacteria, nematodes

  11. Pesticide toxicity • Pesticides have an acute toxicity • rating based on laboratory studies on • animals, usually rodents. An LD50 • rating isgiven expressed in mg/kg of • body weight. The lower the LD50, the • more toxic the chemical.
