Financial Aid/ Scholarships • Encourage all students to apply • Visit www.fafsa.gov to download FAFSA form • Form available January 1, 2015 • Form must be submitted by March 2, 2015 • More scholarship information on Naviance • Financial Aid Info Night at TPHS in November CSS/ Profile: - Similar to FAFSA, but requires more detailed information - Certain private colleges/universities use this form to determine non-government financial aid, such as the institution's own grants, loans and scholarships
The first thing you will do is click on the FERPA Agreement link.
FERPA Agreement • Be sure to print the FERPA form and return to counselor to waive your right to access letter. • No counselor can write you a letter of recommendation without this form on file. • Also, be sure to give one to any teacher who will be writing you a letter. • Students who do not waive their right will receive a generic, neutral letter.
If you are applying to Common App schools, there is an electronic FERPA on commonapp.org which must be completed BEFORE your Naviance account can be matched and teachers/counselors can submit online.
In order to access the Common App FERPA, click on “release authorization” under the “My Colleges” tab on commonapp.org. Since TP is a Naviance school, you ***DO NOT INVITE COUNSELOR OR TEACHERS THROUGH COMMON APP*** Teachers and counselors will submit through Naviance. Remember to waive your rights.
Now go back to Naviance and enter your Common App email address and date of birth. Click match, and your Naviance and Common App are now linked!
You must now list all of the colleges you’re applying to. Click on “add colleges to this list.”
Choose a type of admission and be sure to check what each school offers.
After you find the school and select an admission type, click “Add Colleges”.
Make sure that your college list and application type (early or regular) is ACCURATE! Your counselors and teachers will refer to this list as needed for deadlines.
To find the teacher and counselor brag packets, click on the “about me” tab.
Click on the brag packet to the left that you wish to complete first.
Complete every question and pay close attention to deadlines.
For a teacher recommendation, be sure to complete all the questions as well. For questions that ask for specifics in a class, use separate paragraphs for each teacher and devote equal time to both.
Once your brag packets are done, return to your college list and scroll down to the bottom and under Teacher Recommendations, click on “add/cancel requests”.
Select your teachers and counselor from the pull down menu here. This will send them an email notifying them that the brag packet is done. Be sure to ask them in person first, before sending the email, as a courtesy.
Don’t forget to select “Update Requests” once your teachers and counselor have been selected.
Requesting Letters of Recommendation • Once again, you MUST speak with the recommender (i.e. teacher or counselor) before requesting him/her in Navianceand submit the signed FERPA agreement form. • Common Application schools must be completed through Naviance, NO FORMS/ENVELOPES REQUIRED!!!
Schools NOT on the Common Application • Letters of recommendation are needed for private and some out of state schools only. Check your colleges’requirements. • Be sure to add all colleges you are applying to on Naviance under your college list. • As long as the college accepts electronic submission of school materials (docufide), counselors/teachers will submit through Naviance. **Remember, UC/CSU Schools do not accept letters of recommendation
Letter of Recommendation Request Deadlines • For Early Admissions: • October 1st • The deadline to request and submit your brag packet for a LOR for all colleges/scholarships with an application deadline that is Dec. 1, 2014 or before. • For Regular Admissions: • October 31st • The deadline to request and submit your brag packet for a LOR for all colleges/scholarships with an application deadline that is Dec. 2, 2014 or after.

TIPS for Surviving this time… • Take care of yourself. Make time to relax and decompress (beach, coffee with friends, funny movies, playing with your dog, etc) • Strive for healthy balance in your life. You will need time for academics, college applications/scholarships, friends, family, activities, work, exercise, rest. Don’t spread yourself too thin! • Don’t compare yourself to your friends, siblings or peers. You do not have to share your college list or decisions with others. This is a private process; know who your support system is and access it!
TIPS for Surviving this time… • Pace yourself with the application process. Set aside time daily to work on brag packets, applications and essays so you can put your best self forward. Create a calendar to manage deadlines. • Keep the college admission process in perspective. Believe it or not, this will likely not be the most important decision you ever make. Many colleges could work for you in different ways. You are not choosing a soul mate for life, but rather the place to start your higher education.
