Least Dangerous Assumption • “…in the absence of conclusive data, educational decisions ought to be based on assumptions which, if incorrect, will have the least dangerous effect on the likelihood that students will be able to function independently as adults. Furthermore, we should assume that poor performance is due to instructional inadequacy rather than to student deficits.” • (Anne Donnellan,1984 as quoted by Cheryl Jorgensen, 2005)

Days 1 and 2 • 90 teachers from around the state were chosen based on experience, leadership qualities and commitment to teaching academic content to SwSCD • Recommended by their district • Day 3 • Of the 90 participants, 15 teachers from around the state of Florida • Nominated in writing from their district Two follow up teleconferences

Timeline Implementing Access Points • 2007-2008 Began implementation of Access Points; developed 5-year plan (2008-2012) • 2008-2009 Implemented learning centers and focused on teaching strategies: systematic explicit instruction; task analytic instruction; focused on writing instruction • 2009-2010 Implemented school-wide reading initiative using research-based materials • 2010-2011 Implemented school-wide math initiative using research-based materials; implemented lesson study • 2011-2012 Implemented school-wide science initiative using research-based materials

Lesson Study Groups • Divided teachers and support services staff into 3 groups; elementary, middle school, high school. • Professional Development; teachers and support services staff members received LS training; department chairs and principal become LS facilitators. • Completed 4 full lesson studies during 2010-2011

  29. What did we learn from our Lesson Studies? We identified many strengths and focused on our weaknesses. Two of the biggest problems we found included: • Lack of evidence that instructional supports for learning (support services) were effectively included during instruction • Lack of evidence that IEP goals were fully addressed during instruction
