Social entrepreneurs in the UK 1.7m people run a social venture in the UK 1m people are early stage social entrepreneurs 238,000 trying to start a social venture each year Half of social ventures employ noone Power law of number vs scale 25% of all nascent entrepreneurial activity is social social entrepreneurship is more common amongst the young (20’s to 40’s), minorities, disadvantaged, degree educated; it is gender neutral social ventures started by older people more likely to sustain

Social entrepreneurs in the UK overwhelming majority start community ventures majority are informal and have no legal status those going to scale are more likely to be oriented to public service contracts or commercial growth sectors by cash turnover: public service, clean tech, waste/recycling, fair finance, food major sectors by number of people: sport, youth, community, internet/social media, green important gap in the “growth middle”

Support methods Demographics mean many people have no enterprise experience or family connections Confidence journey is key: being there at the critical steps of start up, first crisis, scaling up Seed funds at key stages Let the real world decide who is doing well and capable of going further Networks and connections: peer to peer, and links to pro bono experts Technical expertise for specific sectors: public sector commissioners, programmers, marketing...

  8. There are many ways to be a social entrepreneur Social ownership or personal commitment? Innovation or replication? What currency: the key resource flow used? What is the market? What styles of leadership? You don’t have to be a saint nor a superhero to be a social entrepreneur

The benefits of supporting social entrepreneurs: Learning enterprise skills, confidence to act- 90% feel able to lead a venture, 98% because of running the project we supported them to create Social impact- the specific social impact of projects carried out Social capital- average 15 volunteer places created Economic regeneration- average 4 jobs and 14 formal training opportunities created Social innovation- new ideas, authentic to their community Continuity- 75% still going at 3 yrs, 9% on next venture

Some thoughts from us to you • early real experience – egschool based • encourage a mass of small ventures - scale out as well as scale up • support may be more important than cash • “angel” finance – first risk investment • avoid over reliance on government • diverse support, clear navigation • tap the talent, wherever it may come from • look for convergence – making business social and charity enterprising
