  3. What Is It? • The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef. • A reef is a chain of coral near the surface of the water. • The Great Barrier Reef is located near the northeast coast of Australia. • It is made up of about 500 small islands and coral reefs. • About 400 types of coral and 1,500 types of fish live in the clear warm water.

  5. Facts • The Great Barrier Reef is one of the seven wonders of the natural world. • It is larger than the Great Wall of China and the only living thing on earth visible from space. • The Great Barrier Reef is a breeding area for humpback whales, migrating from the Antarctic and is also the habitat of a few endangered species including the Dugong (Sea Cow) and large Green Sea Turtle. • Because of its natural beauty, both below and above the water's surface, the Great Barrier Reef has become one of the world’s most sought after tourist destinations.

  6. View from Space • It can be seen much clearer than the Wall Of China.

  7. Facts • The reef contains a huge amount of marine life and comprises of over 3000 individual reef systems and coral cays and literally hundreds of picturesque tropical islands with some of the world’s most beautiful sun-soaked, golden beaches. • The Great Barrier Reef was formed around 500,000 years ago. • The water temperature would be between 18-33 degrees Celsius.

  8. Major Natural Predator • The Crown-of-Thorns Seastar was once an animal of great controversy causing terrible damage to the coral reefs of the Great Barrier Reef. • Many believed that this Seastar was a pest species invading the coral reef habitat predating on and killing corals in great numbers. • Research has indicated that the Crown-of-Thorns Seastaris only found in this habitat and a native species to Australian waters. • The role that the Seastar plays by eating coral polyps forms a population control, making more room for new coral reefs to form.

  10. Climate • The Great Barrier Reef has a tropical climate, with average temperatures in summer of between 24 and 33 degrees Celsius and in winter 14 to 26 degrees. • Being a wet tropic climate, there are only 2 seasons, 'the green' and 'the dry'. • The green season stretches from the first of the monsoonal rains (75% to 90% of the region's rainfall falls in the green season), usually in November, and ends in May. • The region averages over 300 days of sunshine per year. • The water is warm enough to swim in all year round, though do keep in mind that box jellyfish inhabit the coastal waters from October to May.
